What’s your marketing budget?  I’ll come back to that in a moment, but think about it for awhile.

I start this week with a VERY unusual ad. It’s real, I promise.

I stayed at the Las Vegas Hilton hotel recently and they did something quite astonishing at check-in. I’ll spill the details in this episode. Have you seen Dragons Den, the TV show? It started in Japan, then went to the BBC, and now it’s on BBC America. It’s a great show where entrepreneurs pitch their ideas to a group of 5 VC investors. They either shoot the idea down in flames, or embrace it and invest their own money. It’s fascinating to be a fly on the wall. I’ll show you a clip from an episode where a poor girl gets ripped to shreds. I felt sorry for her actually. The Dragons Den concept has now been adapted for U.S TV in the form of a new show by Mark Burnett (Apprentice / Survivor) called ‘Shark Tank’ on ABC, Tuesday evenings.

Our question this week is all about following up by phone. How long should you leave it before calling a prospect? And what should you say? Find out my top tips for telephone selling in this episode.

I’m upset with Archos, a company that makes high-end portable media players.  My new unit broke after using it just twice, and the company didn’t seem the slightest bit interested in helping me, or even keeping my future business.  I returned the broken unit for repair.

They kept me waiting for 30 minutes on the phone to speak to someone.  Then I discover that they apparently have some kind of insane policy where they offered me a new unit at a 15% discount.  That in itself is okay, but I would have had to let them keep the original unit.  So I would have paid for TWO units, and only have ONE.  Er, that doesn’t seem quite right.  They get to repair it then sell it on for profit, at MY expense.  Not the way to treat customers as far as I’m concerned.

On to business.  How do you get more customers without it costing you an arm and a leg?  That’s the question posed to me this week, and the answer will work for virtually any business, so take note!

What about all those long overdue jobs around the house - will they ever get done?  Well, fret not.  I have a handy solution in the form of a simple website where you can outsource any such maintenance or repair that needs to be done.

Finally, our big marketing lesson is from a newspaper.  Really.  I found one that’s doing a good job at marketing using a simple graphic on the front page that takes up just a couple of inches of space.  It’s a no-brainer mareting strategy, and I’ll give you a few pointers about how you can adapt it for your own business, regardless of the niche you’re in.

This is an exciting week for me, and hopefully you too. Why?

When was the last time you used a Yellow Book? Personally, I can’t remember. I dusted mine off the shelf for this episode, and I’d love to know if you’re like me, using online tools to search for local suppliers, rather than books like the Yellow Pages.

The question that’s raised is all about how to spy on competitors pay per click campaigns. It is possible, and I’ve got two web resources for you, one of which is free.

Many people mistype words when they type a domain name into a browser. This is for a number of reasons that I’ll explain, some of which might be surprising to you. Fortunately, there’s an excellent free tool that will tell you what the likely mistakes are for any domain name, even one you haven’t registered yet. This is really useful because you might want to register some of those mis-spelled names and register them, in order to forward the visitor to your website.

Finally, the show wraps up with a big marketing lesson from Dell, the computer company. Dell sent me an invitation to their ‘signature event’ which caught my attention, and so I’ll explain why ‘event’ based marketing is so effective for ANY business. Yes, including yours.

My, how time flies when you’re having fun. This is episode #52 which means the show has been running for a year already! Episode #48 – Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the last few months, you’ll know that Circuit City, the nationwide U.S. electronics chain has finally bitten the dust. I thought it was funny listening to all the financial analysts thrown in their 2 cents about the reasons for Circuit City’s demise. I’ll share my thoughts on the subject – let me know if you agree or disagree.

PayPal has grown from being an upstart startup to a goliath like company. Should you accept PayPal payments, or should you stick with regular credit card merchant accounts? That’s the topic of the question this week. Share your experiences with PayPal – good or bad.

Now, you can have virtually that same service via a free resource called FiltrBox. It’s like Google Alerts on Steroids!

Episode #44 – In the midst of a recession comes a story that’ll warm your heart. A restaurant owner in London has scrapped the prices on the menu, to let the customers decide what they want to move. Some call it stupid, I call it smart, and I’ll tell you why in this episode.

Episode #40 – The folks at Disney are master marketers, in fact there are few companies that match their expertise in that area.  I’ll show you the latest campaign they’ve dreamed up, it’s very cool.

This week’s question is about pricing products – do you think that most customers are concerned by price?  Or do you think price is not the most important factor in a transaction?  I’ll share my viewpoint on this with you, let me know if you disagree – you’re allowed!

It’s a pain in the posterior when your website goes down and you don’t know about it.  It’s especially difficult to track all your sites when you have a number of them.  Fortunately there’s a new, and free service that solves this problem.  I use it.  I like it.

The BIG marketing lesson is from Netflix. They’ve been through some ups and downs with their business – mostly ups actually. Their marketing department has put together some impressive campaigns and I’l focus in on one of them for you in this episode.
