I start this episode by sharing a situation I encountered recently when buying a mount for my plasma TV.  When browsing the local stores, there were many choices, and only one option stood out.  Find out why I bought it, because it’s an interesting marketing principle you can use in your small business.

This week’s viewer question is via video, and relates to how people view your website when they first load the page.  I suggest some tweaks that I hope you can take advantage of in your Internet business.

What’s your marketing budget?  I’ll come back to that in a moment, but think about it for awhile.

Have you seen the Kindle vs iPad ad from Amazon?  It’s an extremely clever piece of marketing in the way that it focuses in on the one thing that Kindle does better than the iPad.  Do you have an iPad or a Kindle, and if so, what do you think of this latest ad?  Let me know.

In this second, special episode from the beautiful Hawaiian island of Maui, I interview David Yamashiro, owner of “Ululani’s” – the most successful shave ice stores in Maui.  In fact, on TripAdvisor.com, Ululani’s has the incredible achievement of being the #1 ‘restaurant’ in the United States!  It’s a similar story on Yelp, where Ululani’s also has the top spot.  This shows the power of rave reviews on niche social networking sites.

Of course, you have to have (a) a great product and (b) outstanding customer service and David has put a lot of time and energy into making sure those two areas are constantly monitored.

I think you’ll find the interview practical and enjoyable, it’s a great success story from a relatively new business, and shows what can be accomplished with a vision, implementation, and attention to detail.

As a struggling small business owner, you must learn to stand out from the crowd. Every business has competition, so how do you persuade customers that you’re better a choice than the next company down the road? It’s tough, which is why I address this topic of getting noticed, in this episode.

Website design is fraught with difficulties, especially when you’re dealing with web designers who are in love with Flash. Yes, flash sites can look great, but they won’t get the traffic or response that non-flash sites get, that’s a fact. I’ll share 3 other website design tips from a BUSINESS stand point in this episode.

I’m a big fan of transcriptions, and you should be too, because it’s a great way to leverage existing content. But who can you trust to do a reliable, accurate job, fast, and inexpensively? Ah, I’m glad you asked!

Finally, a BIG marketing lesson from The Four Seasons Hotel chain. This is a laughably simple strategy that ANY business owner can implement for free, and it will work for you, just as it has worked for The Four Seasons group.

Why does it always happen to me?  That’s what I keep asking myself.  Another customer service horror story for you from a well known car rental company.  I’ll even show you the evidence in this episode.  Let me know what you think they should have done to (a) avoid it, and (b) fix it.

I spent some time with Tony Hsieh, the CEO of Zappos.com last week. He graciously answered the questions posed by myself and other members of our small group which Nick Nanton arranged. I was in Scottsdale, AZ recently and called into the local shopping mall. I passed an Apple store, did a double take, and realized it was in fact a Microsoft store! Seems like they’ve copied just about everything! Frustrating that Microsoft are getting such a whooping from Apple. There’s no sneaky small print or weasel clauses, and it frees travelers to book whatever hotel is most convenient at any given time. I’m not a fan of conventional advertising, I believe it’s a complete waste of money most of the time. There are occasional exceptions, and I’ll show you some examples during this episode.

In this weeks question I came across an excuse that I hear from different people every week.  It’s, “but my business is different – your marketing strategies won’t work in my field”.  This makes me both smile and cringe at the same time.  I smile because it’s funny how so many people think their business is unique and different, and cringe because these people just don’t get it.  People are people, regardless of the niche, and buyers are buyers regardless of the niche.

I discovered a cool tool to spice up your copywriting called CopyDoodles, aka CopyBoosters.  They’re hand drawn images that you can include in a salesletter, whether its online or offline.

I stayed at the Las Vegas Hilton hotel recently and they did something quite astonishing at check-in. I’ll spill the details in this episode. I’m so glad that I left the corporate world many years ago. I really didn’t fit in, and it took me too long to discover that. This week I’ll show you some creative ways that cubicle dwellers are spending their time, to welcome co-workers back from vacation.

2 MIT students have also been creative with $150.  They hooked together a camera, GPS cellphone, beer cooler, and a weather balloon, to take some astonishing photos of space!  If they can accomplish that with $1 think what YOU can do with a little money and a lot of creativity in your business.

99Designs.com has been one of the most popular ‘nifty click’ reccommendations that I’ve made, so I wanted to tell you about a similar service, Hatchwise.com.  It works in a similar way, and I’m impressed, so I encourage you to check it out.

If you fly regularly you’ve probably seen he ad for the ROM fitness machine that appears in many high-end magazines. It costs a whopping $14,995 but the ads are obviously successful based on the fact that they’ve been running for years.  There’s a key reason why.  I’ll explain it during this episode’s ‘Big lessons from Big Brands’ segment.

Have you seen Dragons Den, the TV show? It started in Japan, then went to the BBC, and now it’s on BBC America. It’s a great show where entrepreneurs pitch their ideas to a group of 5 VC investors. They either shoot the idea down in flames, or embrace it and invest their own money. It’s fascinating to be a fly on the wall. I’ll show you a clip from an episode where a poor girl gets ripped to shreds. I felt sorry for her actually. The Dragons Den concept has now been adapted for U.S TV in the form of a new show by Mark Burnett (Apprentice / Survivor) called ‘Shark Tank’ on ABC, Tuesday evenings.

I’m upset with Archos, a company that makes high-end portable media players.  My new unit broke after using it just twice, and the company didn’t seem the slightest bit interested in helping me, or even keeping my future business.  I returned the broken unit for repair.

They kept me waiting for 30 minutes on the phone to speak to someone.  Then I discover that they apparently have some kind of insane policy where they offered me a new unit at a 15% discount.  That in itself is okay, but I would have had to let them keep the original unit.  So I would have paid for TWO units, and only have ONE.  Er, that doesn’t seem quite right.  They get to repair it then sell it on for profit, at MY expense.  Not the way to treat customers as far as I’m concerned.

On to business.  How do you get more customers without it costing you an arm and a leg?  That’s the question posed to me this week, and the answer will work for virtually any business, so take note!

What about all those long overdue jobs around the house - will they ever get done?  Well, fret not.  I have a handy solution in the form of a simple website where you can outsource any such maintenance or repair that needs to be done.

Finally, our big marketing lesson is from a newspaper.  Really.  I found one that’s doing a good job at marketing using a simple graphic on the front page that takes up just a couple of inches of space.  It’s a no-brainer mareting strategy, and I’ll give you a few pointers about how you can adapt it for your own business, regardless of the niche you’re in.

This is an exciting week for me, and hopefully you too. Why?

When was the last time you used a Yellow Book? Personally, I can’t remember. I dusted mine off the shelf for this episode, and I’d love to know if you’re like me, using online tools to search for local suppliers, rather than books like the Yellow Pages.

The question that’s raised is all about how to spy on competitors pay per click campaigns. It is possible, and I’ve got two web resources for you, one of which is free.

Many people mistype words when they type a domain name into a browser. This is for a number of reasons that I’ll explain, some of which might be surprising to you. Fortunately, there’s an excellent free tool that will tell you what the likely mistakes are for any domain name, even one you haven’t registered yet. This is really useful because you might want to register some of those mis-spelled names and register them, in order to forward the visitor to your website.

Finally, the show wraps up with a big marketing lesson from Dell, the computer company. Dell sent me an invitation to their ‘signature event’ which caught my attention, and so I’ll explain why ‘event’ based marketing is so effective for ANY business. Yes, including yours.

What’s going on with taxi drivers? I was down in San Diego last weekend and on every trip I took around town, the taxi drivers decided on their own tip, by giving me back my change, LESS their tip! What’s up with that?!

I show some examples of creative advertising that I think you’ll enjoy. They’re great examples of creative ways to stand out from the crowd and get noticed, and I hope they inspire you.

I was on a Delta flight recently and I received a little card from GotoMeeting on my dinner tray. It was the right message, to the right audience, at the right time. MOST advertising gets this wrong.

My initial reaction on hearing about RyanAir’s plans to charge for using the toilets on their planes was shock, but in this economy it figures. RyanAir have a track record of doing things like that. Nothing is free on their flights, not even a measly drink. Rather than try and skimp and save at every turn, wouldn’t they be better off focusing on PLEASING the customer?! Apparently the only airline that gets what customers want (and gives it to them), is Virgin.

If you’ve ever wondered about creating a ‘lite’ version of an existing product and selling it cheaper or even give it away for free to attract business of the standard version, pay attention.  That’s exactly the topic I’m discussing this week in ‘Ask Andrew’.

A lot of people ask me how to put an opt-in email form on their website so that they can capture the names and email addresses of visitors.  I use Infusion but that’s only really suitable for an established business in my opinion.  Enter Wufoo.com, a resource that makes it easy to create and include any kind of webform on your website.  I think you’ll like it.

This week’s BIG marketing lesson is from FatCow hosting.  This is a company that does an amazing job at creating a distinctive brand with personality.  You can learn a lot from looking at their site.

Wow, what a busy week. I’ve been travelling around the country. Last week included:

Salt Lake City, Washington DC, Bethesda, MD, New York City, Stamford, CT, and Chicago, Il!

Did you notice that both Haagen Dazs and Ben & Jerry’s have released tiny ‘snack’ size versions of their popular ice creams – available in supermarkets? They sell for around a $1, so the profits must be substantial.

A lot of people send in questions about registering domain names, so I think this one will be helpful for you. It’s about how to register the best possible domain name for a business. I’ll give my top tips that you need to keep in mind.

As you now know, I travel a lot, and it makes sense for me to keep an eye on airfare bargains. While I use Kayak.com much of the time, I’ve also found Airfarewatchdog.com to be really helpful, for a number of reasons that I explain in the episode this week. Both are good tools for different reasons.

This week’s BIG marketing lesson is from The Guitar Center, which is a national chain of music stores here in the USA. They do a great job of keeping connected with their customers via direct mail, and I was impressed with one particular strategy that I explain in this episode. You can do something similar, and I’ve even pre-researched some resources to help you implement, fast!
