I’m upset with Archos, a company that makes high-end portable media players.  My new unit broke after using it just twice, and the company didn’t seem the slightest bit interested in helping me, or even keeping my future business.  I returned the broken unit for repair.

They kept me waiting for 30 minutes on the phone to speak to someone.  Then I discover that they apparently have some kind of insane policy where they offered me a new unit at a 15% discount.  That in itself is okay, but I would have had to let them keep the original unit.  So I would have paid for TWO units, and only have ONE.  Er, that doesn’t seem quite right.  They get to repair it then sell it on for profit, at MY expense.  Not the way to treat customers as far as I’m concerned.

On to business.  How do you get more customers without it costing you an arm and a leg?  That’s the question posed to me this week, and the answer will work for virtually any business, so take note!

What about all those long overdue jobs around the house - will they ever get done?  Well, fret not.  I have a handy solution in the form of a simple website where you can outsource any such maintenance or repair that needs to be done.

Finally, our big marketing lesson is from a newspaper.  Really.  I found one that’s doing a good job at marketing using a simple graphic on the front page that takes up just a couple of inches of space.  It’s a no-brainer mareting strategy, and I’ll give you a few pointers about how you can adapt it for your own business, regardless of the niche you’re in.

My, how time flies when you’re having fun. This is episode #52 which means the show has been running for a year already! Thanks for your support and encouragement along the way, and hopefully I’ve given you lots of things to think about to help improve your business. Of course, this is still early days and I’ve got a lot more to share with you in future episodes, especially when the show moves to the new www.GotBiz.tv network in May.

Well, I took the cameras out and about in my local area this week. Why? So I could show you first hand, how so many companies (the majority in fact) use meaningless names for their businesses. I’ll also prove to you why it’s so important to come up with an intelligent name for your business.

Vladimil submitted a question about how to compete against a well known, well established company in the same niche or field. I provided a suggestion that any business in the same situation can use, so look out for that marketing tip.

Then it’s on to the Nifty Click of the week. This time I feature a free online presentation creator called 280Slides.com – I really like what this company offers, and I encourage you to check it out.

Finally, the BIG marketing lesson is from Entrepreneur magazine’s SmallBiz books division. They’ve done something very smart that you can copy in your business. It relates to buyer psychology, and beyond the Entrepreneur example, I’ll give you a couple of other examples to prove the point about how effective this technique can be.

Episode #48 – Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the last few months, you’ll know that Circuit City, the nationwide U.S. electronics chain has finally bitten the dust. I thought it was funny listening to all the financial analysts thrown in their 2 cents about the reasons for Circuit City’s demise. This week’s question is about pricing products – do you think that most customers are concerned by price?  Or do you think price is not the most important factor in a transaction?  I’ll share my viewpoint on this with you, let me know if you disagree – you’re allowed!

It’s a pain in the posterior when your website goes down and you don’t know about it.  It’s especially difficult to track all your sites when you have a number of them.  Fortunately there’s a new, and free service that solves this problem.  I use it.  I like it.

The BIG marketing lesson is from Top Gear, the popular UK based show about cars.  I’m not the slightest bit interested in cars, but you’ll see why I enjoy the show so much.  I even download it on my full to the brim iPod – so it must be good!

Want to be hassled? I can take care of that for you! It’s a free service that’ll let you know if any of your websites go offline at any time. Really useful, and I’m using it.

The BIG marketing lesson is from Netflix. They’ve been through some ups and downs with their business – mostly ups actually. Their marketing department has put together some impressive campaigns and I’l focus in on one of them for you in this episode.

Episode #37 – The last episode of 2008!

Dan Ariely’s excellent book ‘Predictably Irrational’ should be added to your ‘must have’ list.  The book contains countless practical examples of how we make odd decisions consistently.  From a logical point of view many things that we do don’t make any sense, but we’re consistent about them, hence predictably irrational.

This week’s question comes from Nick Carroll of Dolphin Printing and Publishing in Orlando, Florida.  Nick asks about how to give a ‘dull’ website an overhaul without spending a lot of money.   The Nifty Click web resource also relates to the same topic and it’s one of my top 5 favorites, so I hope you get excited about it too!

Episode #36 -I’m trying a new player this week from Blip.tv – unfortunately Viddler, the hosting service I had been using, was displaying intrusive ads in the videos which I know you hated as much as I did. It wouldn’t have been so bad if the ads were even relevant to the topics in the videos, but they weren’t.

The eagle eyed among you will notice there’s a new DVD available on the right hand side of the page – Nifty Clicks Live!  It’s a presentation I did at a seminar earlier this year, where I revealed some of my favorite Nifty Clicks.  You can get the DVD for FREE, just pay the shipping and handling.

I couldn’t help having a rant about Christmas music. Why oh why do all stores feel that they have to play the same songs from September to December? It drives me insane having to listen to 23 versions of Jingle Bells…

By the way, did you hear about this?  America’s largest law firms got together to come up with pre-approved Christmas card wording for Winter 2009.  The new standardized wording is designed to avoid offending anyone.

Here’s how it’ll look:

“Please accept with no obligation, implied or implicit my best wishes for an environmentally conscious, socially responsible, low stress, non-addictive, gender neutral, celebration of the winter solstice holiday, practiced within the most enjoyable traditions of the religious persuasion of your choice, or secular practices of your choice, with respect for the religious/secular traditions of all, and a fiscally successful, personally fulfilling and medically uncomplicated recognition of the onset accepted calendar year 2010, but without due respect for the calendars of choice of others, and without regard to the race, creed, color, age, physical ability, religious faith, or sexual orientation of the wishee.”

And then there’s the small print at the bottom of the card:

“By accepting this greeting, you are accepting these terms:

This greeting is subject to clarification or withdrawal. It is freely transferable with no alteration to the original greeting. It implies no promise by the wisher to actually implement any of the wishes for him/herself or others and is void where prohibited by law and is revocable at the sole discretion of the wisher. This wish is warranted to perform as expected within the usual application of good tidings for a period of one year, or until the issuance of a subsequent holiday greeting, whichever comes first and warranty is limited to replacement of this wish or the issuance of a new wish at the sole discretion of the wisher.”

I know that podcasts are an excellent way to position yourself as an expert, but I’m not an expert in that field, so I’ve deferred to the expertise of Jason Van Orden, who is an expert. The BIG marketing lesson comes from Du, who you’ve probably never heard of, right? They’re one of the leading mobile phone companies in the United Arab Emirates. I think you’ll find this lesson interesting because it shows how important it is to have something physical to give to the customer even if you’re a service business.

The viewer question this week is from Mike Kothokota who works as an independent consultant in the financial planning industry.  He asks about how to compete with the big corporate companies, especially in view of the fact that many of them are struggling to make a profit right now.

Anything that increase conversion on a website should be looked at seriously.  That’s why I recommend SitePal to you as this week’s Nifty Click.  I’ll explain what it does in the episode.  Please try it out on your own website because it’s proven to increase conversion (conversion is all about persuading people to go from being a passive visitor to buying something or taking some action such as giving you their name and email address).

The BIG marketing lesson relates to one of my pet peeves.  Yes, I know.  I have lots of pet peeves don’t I?  But I think you might relate to this one.  Fortunately for us all, Panasonic are one of the few companies that have acknowledged our pain and frustration, and are doing something about it.

Episode #34 - I HATE telemarketing.  It’s interruptive, confrontational, and antiquated.  I’ll share a way that you can stop being hassled, and I think you’ll appreciate it ;)

The viewer question this week is all about website design, specifically addressing the balance of form versus function.  There are many beautifully designed websites that are hopeless for marketing, which means that there’s obviously there needs to be a balance.  I’ll share my thoughts on this topic in the video.

Automation is a big component of any successful business.  Most of us do things manually, which is time consuming and unproductive.  Ping.fm is a real breakthrough for posting on social networks.  From one account on Ping.fm, you can post a message to around 30 different social networks, automatically.  It’s an amazing resource, especially when you consider the fact that it’s completely free!

FedEx are smart company – usually.  But recently they made a decision that’s idiotic in my opinion.  Personally, I can’t see any logic or reasoning behind it that makes sense from a marketing point of view.  I can understand it from an ego driven standpoint, but who cares about that?!  I’ll share my (strong) opinions with you in the episode, let me know if you agree or disagree by posting a comment on the blog here.

Episode #24 - ’24 Hour Fitness’ is a company that’s well known for one thing. They’re open 24 hours a day. Or so I thought. Check out what happened to me when I tried to become a member, you might be surprised… or maybe the same thing happened to you?

This week’s viewer question is from a Chiropractor in Denver. He’s serving Hispanics in his area but many affluent customers are moving in to the neighborhood. He wants to know whether he should stick with the Hispanics, or adapt to serve more of the affluent clients. What do you think? You’ll see my suggestions in the show.

Episode #23 - Delta Airlines customer service sucks.  They really do.  I’m one of their premium, platinum, super duper flyers, and they don’t treat me any different from anyone else.  But that’s still not the point.  I needed to call them about changing my flight during Hurricane Ike, and it was not a good experience as you’ll see…

Episode #22 -Have you ever bought a magazine from the newstand that is sealed?  When you open, usually a bunch of stuff falls out onto your lap.  I usually throw those inserts away immediately, don’t you?  You know they’re adverts, right?  Well, I recently bought a techy magazine that included a different kind of insert – a mini magazine.  It was positioned as bonus content, and the content was pretty good, but it was sponsored by a chain of electronics stores in the UK called Dixons.  Every page featured products that you could buy online.  A different way of getting a marketing message through to the consumer – I thought it was nicely done.  Makes a difference from the pile of leaflets that falls into your lap.

The viewer question comes from Rob of VancouverHobbies.com.  Rob asks about what he should put on the side of his shipping boxes to attract attention and get more business.  Rob is smart to have thought of using that space wisely.  Watch the show to see the logical suggestions I provide, and remember how few people actually are doing that!

Episode #21 - I did a little experiment that you might be interested in.  I laid about 40 or 50 business cards down on a table and scanned them to see if any stood out.  They didn’t.  Not surprising I guess, but disappointing.  In fact, the MAJORITY of the cards had the same layout, the same colors, the same style, the same….just about everything.  It’s ridiculous!  These kinds of cards get thrown away within minutes of being handed to a person, and they certainly won’t remember who gave it to them.  So what CAN you do to stand out from the crowd with your business cards?  I provide some suggestions.

The viewer question comes from Yannick Pauli who lives in Lithuania.  Not sure where that is.  I should, I’m from Europe.  It think it’s near Russia.  Or maybe Germany.  Geography was never my strong point.  Anyway, Yannick, who I don’t think is any relation to Yanik Silver, asked if there was any reasoning behind releasing this web tv show on Wednesday’s.  Well, watch the show and you’ll find out the answer…!

Most people are familiar with YouSendIt.com, but did you know that you can now send files to someone from within Adobe Photoshop, Outlook, Final Cut Pro, and a bunch of other commonly used software apps?  It’s true, and it works really well.  I’m impressed, and I encourage you to check it out.

Episode #20 - A young lad appeared at my door the other day trying to offer me a free alarm system.  Problem was I know this ploy very well.  When I showed him that I knew the scheme he was lost for words.  As it happens, it’s not a bad offer.  You DO get a free alarm system, but the cost is spread over the course of a few years with monthly maintenance fees, kinda’ like cellphone deals.  If he had just been honest and upfront, he’d make a lot more sales.  These days customers value someone they can trust more than ever before.  If they get the feeling that someone’s trying to dupe them, mislead them or play tricks, they tend to put a large barrier of resistance up.

The viewer question comes from Mimi Whittaker of KingofCrown in California.  She faces a common issue of the economic downturn.  I provide 3 ways anyone (even you) can promote their business for free.  Marketing doesn’t need to cost a lot of money, especially when you get creative!

The nifty click is a little known website that gives you instant recommendations on what to read, based on a book you’ve just read.  In other words, if you liked ‘x’ then you’ll love ‘y’.  The recommendations are based on the experiences of readers with similar tastes as yours.  It’s like Pandora for bookworms!

This episode’s BIG marketing lesson is from In n Out burger, the fast food restaurant chain.  Did you know they have a ‘secret’ menu?  Yep, it’s true.  This encourages word of mouth viral marketing.  Everyone wants to be in on a secret, so what can you do with your business?  I give some suggestions.

Episode #18 – I’ve been watching more episodes from the last series of the UK version of Donald Trump’s ‘The Apprentice’ with Sir Alan Sugar.  It’s mind boggling how many idiotic decisions are made by the contestants.  You gotta’ see the episode I talk about in this show, where they have to design and create a new greeting card.  It’s hilarious and painful at the same time.

The viewer question comes from Charlene Webster in San Antonio, TX.  She rightly observed that its better to be sought out by customers, rather than do what most business owners do, which is to seek out (i.e. cold call) customers.  I give some suggestions on how to do just that.

Episode #17 – Dell are not in my good books.  I ordered a NEW 24″ LCD monitor and it turned up faulty.  When they sent a replacement, it was a refurbished unit!  Has anything like that happened to you?  Do you know someone that works for Dell?  It’s unacceptable!
