Who is Andrew Lock, and What is “Help My Business!” All About?
“Help My Business!” is a free Online TV show that helps entrepreneurs and small business owners to build a better business and stand out from the crowd.
It’s been described as “The Daily Show for Entrepreneurs” which gives a flavor of what to expect: dry British humor, playful sarcasm, and irreverence, with a soft and chewy center of both entertainment and brilliant marketing insights.
Hosted by maverick marketer Andrew Lock, a.k.a. the “Yoda of Marketing” (not because he’s short with green pointy ears, but because of his encyclopedic knowledge of marketing), the show provides a proliferation of practical marketing tips, big business lessons from well known brands, and lots of little known online resources that small business owners can use to increase their profits fast.
It all started with potatoes… As a kid, Andrew challenged every ‘normal’ way of making money that was accepted by all the other kids.
While most school age youths were doing a paper round to earn some pocket money, Andrew hated getting up early in the morning so that didn’t seem like a good idea. Besides, he was never one to blindly ‘follow the crowd’ and he knew he could do better, regardless of his young age and inexperience.
I had no interest in potatoes, but the money was hard to pass by. Actually, I got a lot of satisfaction from helping so many people who couldn’t get out of the house. They really appreciated the service and would frequently pay me more than the asking price. I realized at that point that within reason, price sometimes isn’t an issue. If demand is high and there’s no competition, price is often taken out of the equation. That was one of my earliest marketing lessons at a time when I didn’t even know what marketing was!
School and Beyond
Understandably at school, Andrew was known by everyone as ‘the entrepreneur’, and he quickly won the top award for business studies.
Andrew’s wrote his first book at age 14, a guidebook about planning a vacation to Florida theme parks. He says: “This was before desk-top publishing so I used a typewriter to create the guide, and photocopied it to make copies to sell. By today’s standards they looked horrible, but again it taught me that if the information was good, people would overlook presentation (or lack of it).”
At the age of 16, fresh out of school, Andrew started a video production business, and over the years he has produced countless movie projects, commercials, and documentaries.
In 1999 he created his first info-product and sought the endorsement of a well-known British celebrity, Paul Daniels, who is a household name in the UK having been featured on the BBC for more than 15 years. Paul graciously agreed to help Andrew, which led to a long-term partnership, and in 2001 Andrew became Paul’s personal manager.
Drawing from influences like Dan Kennedy, Jay Abraham, Claude Hopkins and Eugene Schwartz, Andrew applied unconventional marketing methods to help Paul stand out from the crowd.
In 2003 Andrew moved to Los Angeles, CA, and setup a video production business. He stumbled across a few people who were doing some creative marketing online, notably Yanik Silver. Yanik invited Andrew to film his first event, and from there, Andrew discovered the world of Internet marketing.
In 2008, Andrew created his own WebTV show to help other entrepreneurs, called “Help! My Business Sucks!” In 2015 the name was changed to “Help My Business!” to better reflect the more advanced marketing concepts that are included in the show, and it became the #1 video podcast in the ‘marketing’ category of Apple iTunes.
