I’ve rented a lot of cars in a lot of cities in the last year or so, and let me tell you that the kiosks that are supposed to save you time and stress, are near useless as far as I’m concerned. I get so annoyed whenever I go to pickup a car because regardless of the company I’m using (Hertz / Alamo / Enterprise / Dollar / Budget) all of their kiosks suck. Invariably they’re not working, out of order. Usually it happens when the lines for the counter are the longest. I think that’s Murphy’s contribution…

How do you promote a product or service that’s commonly misunderstood by your audience? It’s a challenge, but it’s possible – just listen to the advice I give in this week’s episode.

Another question I get asked a lot is, “I’m starting a new business and I’m looking for a supplier of ‘X’ – where can I find that?” If you’re wondering something similar, there’s a nifty resource called Worldwide Brands that can help you. It’s an excellent, reliable, inexpensive, and effective service where you can find and contact suppliers for almost any product you can think of.

As you know, I’m a fan of Disney marketing, and their DVD division is no exception. They do a great job of a marketing principle known as ‘scarcity’ – limiting some aspect of the sale. In Disney’s case, they limit the length of TIME that their movies are available for sale. They remind potential customers that the titles will be going ‘back into the vault’ for a period of time. This strategy works well to help customers avoid procrastination, which is a major cause of delaying (and usually canceling) the sale (at least in the customer’s mind).

Look at ways you can implement scarcity in your business.

    Another great show, after visiting Disney World recently. I paid closer attention to their marketing and it is amazing how everything they do is geared around marketing and creating an experience. Following your advice and the example of Disney I have a tried to create an experience in my office and separate my business from other local offices.

  3. Hey Andrew, regarding Michelle’s site (retitled “English Writing for Swedish Companies”) how about adding automatically launched audio or video in dual languages, to draw people right in?

    For example she could say “Hi, this is Michelle, welcome to my site” , “Hej , den här er Michelle , välkomnande till min tomt” etc…

  5. Another great episode, Andrew. I especially liked the kiosk chaos comments. Seems like many places are trying to give us the appearance of service and simplicity…yet falling flat on their faces. One of my pet peeves is stores that have dozens of checkout lanes but NEVER have more than 2 or 3 open even at the busiest time of day.

    As always, I enjoyed this episode and especially liked the Disney discussion. A great explanation of “scarcity” and how to accomplish it without losing credibility. I often do this with my in person seminars on Emotional Freedom Technique by limiting the audience number so that everyone who needs personal attention knows they will get it from me. Students like it better than just being a part of a crowd.

    Well, the best and most successful form of ‘scarcity’ marketing is actually a very obvious one but one that is commonly looked-over. Anyone heard of Black Friday (or Boxing Day)? It is so many levels of ‘scarcity” it is frightening. While yes, it is mixed with a lot of other techniques, the primary ‘drive’ of Black Friday is the sheer deals provided by the day in retail. Every ad you’ll see ‘Limited Quantities’, ’100 chain-wide’, ’5 per store’ and so forth. Mixed with great deals and another ‘scarcity’, the date, and you have the one of the most successful marketing ploys showcasing ‘scarcity’.

    Now, one of the pitfalls in my opinion of relying on ‘scarcity’ as a marketing technique, is that in itself is not a a marketing strategy as a whole. It must be combined with other market strategies to be effective. If you offer a limited deal, doesn’t do a bit of good if noone knows who you are, what the product you are offering or if there is any benefit to jumping on the offer.

    Whenever I come over to the States I book my car online with Budget (seems to be the cheapest) and having signed up to their RAPIDREZ system (Free!) I get dropped of at a special stop before the main office where the queues are, go to a TV monitor look for my name and go to the bay listed where all the cars are for my price range. Fantastic! I can pick the style and colour I want, as they always seem to have lots of the budget ones (hence the name I suppose) and then I show my Rapidrez card at the exit barrier and I’m away. Five minutes max I would say and that’s inspecting the car in and out at my own pace. It’s worked for me at LA, SFO, and San Jose but I’m sure many airports offer it, as they list RAPIDREZ as a choice. Maybe you should give it a go next time you need a car at the airport? Just a thought – regards Tim

  9. I recently went to home depot and its was insane, no cashiers were open only the automated self-checkout i had about 40 small pieces of piping and i had to manually pass 40 small pipes throught the checkout and took me about 20 minutes to pay!

    I feel your pain on the kiosk thing. The worlds worst is the grocery store. I mean the technology is a little slow and people just turn stupid when they get in the kiosk line. They kill me.

    As far as car rental kiosks, I don’t use them. I am a fan of national emerald isle. You dont’ have to talk to anyone. you just go to the lot and get a car. and drive away. seamless and easy. Give it a go.

    These services are so vital and can tap so much customer if only they deliver what they promise.

    It’s very true whenever I have my car worked on I go to Budget rent a car you have to wait an hour for them to come pick you up, by the time they come pick you up you could have walked there and back.

    I learned a lot about marketing online. Which is quiet helpful in the insurance business.

  21. I agree, when trying to choose a Kiosk it’s based on a “first come- first serve” service. When it comes to advertising they always use marketing to show you want to know on television. But, when you actually go down to one of their centers you are always greeted with the conceirge who doesn’t answer questions correctly or love their job and push you to someone else to answer it. The same applies to online customer service. I personally use HP phone customer service, and it SUCKS. They claim to be a prestigious company, but their products break in less than a month past “moderate usage” and they hire the cheapest employees possible from foreign nations. They aren’t creating solutions for people with questions. They are creating more “ambiguity” and stress for themselves and us the consumer.

  22. I understood ur problem with the kiosk. But normally most of the Kiosks don’t work.They are not to reduce the time for customers but to attract customers. A small marketing strategy to promote they are advanced than their compete tors.And regarding the “English Writing for Swedish Companies” Site on the home page she has to promote her work and the nature of the work involving .And regarding the strategy to promote as limited edition its really great.

  28. Enjoyed the video. I think its the same whether its a kiosk or a website. Either way there’s a piece of technology that can enable your customers to find your service, or turn them off and turn them away.Since its your foot in the door, it has to be credible, it has to be engaging, and it has to help you move from a state where you don’t know anything to a state where you’ve accomplished what you want to do. If the design of the site or kiosk is bad, you’re pretty much done for.

  32. I really enjoyed the video, and it had a lot of great tips. I too hate kiosks and other variations of them, particularly in stores like Wal-Mart. More often than not, at least half of their “Self-Checkout” counters are broken or just turned off. What is the point of having them? The scarcity tactic used by Disney among others is also a very brilliant idea that I’ve noticed is very common among large businesses. Very smart, very effective. Great video!
