Remember all the fuss about Y2K in 1999? Amazing that was 10 years ago, isn’t it? Well, it’s now a new decade and I’ve got some exciting new features to tell you about for the show.

The other day I went to Costco and I was impressed to see how they’d given so much thought to which products they would feature at this time of year, to tie in with people’s new years resolutions. Can you guess what products filled the front of the store near the entrance? Watch the episode to find out, and don’t forget to see how you can cash in on seasonal trends in your business.

There’s a confusing array of shopping cart software available for ecommerce transactions and there’s no single ‘one size fits all’ product that’s best for every situation. I’ll give you a couple of recommendations in this episode, and if you know of any other good providers, post a comment below.

Setting goals is the easy part – keeping them is the hard part, but this week I show you a new resource that can help you. Intelligently, it gives you a daily nudge to help keep you on track.

Lastly, our big marketing lesson comes from Evian water. I think you’ll be intrigued at the way they sell a product that’s normally free out of our faucet (tap) and manage to charge people $15-$20 for it. The lesson to adapt for your small business is…. well, watch the episode to find out ;)

Let me know your opinion about the topics covered in the show this week – leave your comment below, it’s really easy to do.

Enjoy the show!

  1. It was an interesting news piece…Generally I am not quite interested in watching this type of stuff but the news was made so interesting that it made me glued to the screen. I liked every bit of it especially the marketing technique of Evian water. Kudos!!!

  2. Hi Andrew,
I am a relatively new viewer of your show and find it useful. Already i have implemented many of your tips and utilized some of your links.
With regards to your e-commerce suggestions.

We are considering using opencart – an open source tool. Are there any things we should be cautious of when using this kind of solution. We currently use Joomla for our website design and are very happy with that.

    Keep up the great work.

Good and very informational video. Specially a free marketing , buying tips are helpful for people who are sitting at home or working from home. The goal tracking site also looks interesting. Its unique and one can actually improve their habits by using it. I will definitely try. The evian water marketing is amazing. The marketing is so smart and really makes to think twice about what you are doing with your business. Selling water and marketing it as moisture replenishment device… Really one needs to be very smart to survive the competition.

  4. Thanks, Andrew, for another interesting and informative show. An interesting marketing technique I observed this year in Turkey for New Years was gift baskets with wine, snack foods, vitamins and arm weights. I guess the exercise equipment will be useful in working off those alcohol calories! I’m really interested in beginning my own online business soon, but I am still in the planning stages. I’ll probably be viewing all of the past episodes that I’ve missed as research material for marketing strategies!

  5. stunned by the evian examples – that’s totally crackers!
The link in description for habitforge is wrong.
    Cheers Andrew!

  6. This Nifty Clicks video is so interesting! I can’t wait to try the wonderful websites that Andrew went over- especially habitforge.com….genius! The evian example really makes me think about everything that I buy- HA!

  7. Good show as always, Andrew. Appreciate the shopping cart info. I’ve found paypal to be good for a simple setup.

Also, I miss the funny t-shirt!

Great show! 9. Excellent show, Andrew!

There are so many takeaways from the Evian spot! Especially powerful is the idea that 20% will take a premium offer…pair that with the 80/20 rule and that is huge motivation to make sure there is always a premium offer for my clients.

Thanks tons. This was one of the best episodes ever, and that’s saying a lot!

  12. Hi Andrew,

And a Happy New Year to you too!
I wonder if Costco mgmt all read from the same page or if the “front door” displays are a representation of the neighborhood they are in. My Costco didn’t have vitamins near the front door, but they had plenty of holiday cheer. i.e., Grand Mariner, Champaigne, Cookies, etc. Didn’t see the vitamins close to the door.
Your Evian (Naive) episode gives me an idea for a new blog with affiliate products. That’s exciting, I’ll let you know what happens.

  13. Andrew;

I am a new viewer to your show, and I have spent all morning catching up on what I am quickly seeing as a valuable business resource. Your views and insights allows me to evaluate my self and the progress of my new venture.

With that said, I am a new marketing company currently at the tail end of the planning stages. I have a website “coming soon” image on the site now, business plan is complete, infrastructure is in place and sitting at about a $3000.00 budget to get started (keep in mind that we offer web development so that should keep our web costs down)

I would like to see a small segment on starting a business from the ground up – with an embarrassingly small budget. My goal is to turn the $3000.00 into 2 website sales within 1 month of launch.

Thanks for your consideration, and feel free to contact me at my e-mail!

  15. Another great show, Andrew. I loved the Evian spot! It has always bewildered me that people will actually PAY for water. A couple of smart marketing examples in that area come from Coca-Cola & Pepsi who got the brilliant idea a few years ago to start selling the purified water they use to create their soft drinks. Every time someone buys Dasani or Aquafina bottled water they are buying Coke/Pepsi without the carbonation and syrup…and paying the same price, if not more! Go figure.

After all, everything IS marketing, and marketing IS everything!!

  16. andrew really i’m so happy on watching your great stuff.. your marketting technique were amazing.and also thank u for giving us ur great marketting tips..keep updsting ur episode

  19. Hello from Mexico.
About the on line store solution, I agree that Paypal can offer a good option for simple low volume items store. After many years working with ecommerce projects here in Mexico, I’m implementing online store with Joomla and VirutMart. It is easy and fast to setup and manage.
Thanks for the tips and ideas, great show!

  20. Andrew,

When bottled water became big, I always thought I went into the wrong business… now that they’re selling bottled water spray for $15… I KNOW I went into the wrong business :-)

  21. Joe Potenza says:

Marketing plain water as something special has always amazed me, but isn’t that what perdue did with chicken so many years ago? When selling a commodity the first rule is always to differentiate.

  22. Thanks for all your comments and suggestions, keep ‘em coming!

    Andrew

  23. That’s crazy about the fake man falling off the roof. You’d think nowadays it would be the opposite.

I want to try the habit website. it looks nifty!

And as far as evian. They’re nuts.

  24. Hi Andrew,

You may know this already but there is an error message on the pop-up sign-up form for your “7 Killer Methods. . .” guide. It returns something like “cannot process form.”

This is also the case with the sign-up form on the page under the video.

  25. Hey Andrew, Thanks for the reminder about Y2K….how funny…I spent the entire evening prior backing up my Apple Mac on Syquest cartridges…an AGE ago!

  26. Here are two sites that are really great e-commerce solutions. I’ve worked with both of them in different and feel that both are great, especially for those starting out.

    Storenvy
Known as the Social Shopping Community. My friend actually owns this site and it has an easy back-end to maneuver through.

HERE are some of the store features.

    Big Cartel
Free stores for those only selling 5 items or less. After that it is a montly fee.

I hope this helps someone out. :)

  27. Andrew,

Let me tell you one thing right now is that I have enjoyed every bit of your program. As the last lines of you that “Everything about a business is nothing but only marketing” makes lot of sense. In general it was an educational 12-minute video stint that I have tried to learn & grasp. Such was your demonstration that I couldn’t resist myself bookmarking this page for future references. 46. Hi Andrew,
Its wan an interesting clipping.i will try to implement your ideas. Thanks for giving the g8t opportunities. Keep it up.
    Thanks.

  47. The old marketing strategy was ‘find a need and fill it’. Evian changed that to ‘create a market, and convince people they need it’. While I don’t buy Naive water, the strategy is brilliant.

  48. Hi Andrew
You have a great video there, helping other people come up in their business, a selfless deed indeed! It has also shown me things i didn’t know!

  49. Andrew,
It was nice and worth video to watch it. Your help in sharing the successful ideas helped me a lot. The advance market techniques are awesome.

  50. Starting business is really hard but with help from friends and relatives it become more easy. Also videos like this is really helpful. Thanks a lot.

  51. Nice and friendly approach to business. Everything was introduced with a humorous and light attitiude. The presenter, Andrew, knows how to appeal to an audience. The question was well chosen, one that would appeal to a large audience and well answered – i.e. question answered and suggestions provided. I found the Evian and their “true water experience” piece both interesting and funny. I enjoyed the whole blog to be honest.

  52. Loved the bit about the guy hanging from the house! How funny! Costco is brilliant with their merchandising of weight-loss products. I didn’t know ProStores was owned by eBay! Hm, learn something new everyday, eh? I found this very insightful, thanks Andrew! :]

  53. rahul jayaswal says:

The evian marketing was very good.the other marketing techniques provide valuable information and helps in many ways.

  54. Fyi…

The free “7 Killer Methods for Marketing without Money” report is available again now, there was a technical glitch that had prevented some people from accessing it.

  60. Just discovered this podcast, it’s great. Only one problem, I can’t download before episode #60 in itunes. Is there somewhere I can download earlier eps? I like to listen to them while I take my dog for a walk:)

  61. Hi Andrew,

all I have to say is; WELL DONE, you are setting new standards!
Reading randomly on other episode’s blogs; it was obvious that some of them were not quite fair with you, remember being successful does not attract only good things and that jealousy makes ppl nasty.

Thank you and keep up with the excellent work!
