I’m not a fan of conventional advertising, I believe it’s a complete waste of money most of the time. There are occasional exceptions, and I’ll show you some examples during this episode.

In this weeks question I came across an excuse that I hear from different people every week.  It’s, “but my business is different – your marketing strategies won’t work in my field”.  This makes me both smile and cringe at the same time.  I smile because it’s funny how so many people think their business is unique and different, and cringe because these people just don’t get it.  People are people, regardless of the niche, and buyers are buyers regardless of the niche.

I discovered a cool tool to spice up your copywriting called CopyDoodles, aka CopyBoosters.  They’re hand drawn images that you can include in a salesletter, whether its online or offline.

The BIG marketing lesson this week is from Delta Airlines.  I know, what am I doing recommending an airlines?!  Delta did something that surprised me, that turned out to be an excellent marketing lesson for all.

Finally on this episode, stay tuned for an interview with Travis Miller and Jimmy Vee from ‘Bad for Business’, the new show on GotBiz.tv

  2. very interesting video, i liked the ads he showed that he liked. the handwritten text thing doesn’t really seem like a good idea though, considering i’ve received junk mail using it and it seemed obvious what the companies were trying to do. the interview was pretty interesting though… the shirts were kinda cheesy though.

  3. hey Andrew, great show again – I particularly enjoyed the interview at the end (I’m definitely going to check out that book).

On the baby front, our little girl arrived after 76 hours of labour. We’ve called her Angel Mae and she’s gorgeous :D

    Cheers,
    Tony.

  4. Andrew, sorry to report that http://www.gotbiz.tv/ has been hacked

    :(

  5. Andrew,

I click on the link for GotBiz TV and it brought me to a website that said something about the evil coder. You need to look into that.

  6. great show, why doesn’t the woman with the business that no one understands do some videos that focus on results like you said but also she could use humor with people trying to pronounce what she does and trying to explain it. These could really stand out and grab attention.

  8. The ‘Copy Boosters / Doodles’ looks interesting but man it is expensive – $397! When I watched this segment I thought that product must be about $50 – $100 but almost $400 – wow that is alot of money. Does any one know of a less expensive alternative?

  9. Andrew,

Thank you for another enlightening episode. I felt like you were speaking to me directly. Why? First of all, I’ve been using Copydoodles for since February 2008. It works with print and on my websites. I first used it on follow up letters and envelopes. It gets people’s attention and if it gets them to open the envelope it has done the job.
Second, i’ve been following Jim and Travis since 2006. We are marketing to the same industry. Their book, “Gravitational Marketing” is a must for any serious marketing library.
    Best regards,
    Hal

  10. Here is a succes story:

Hi Andrew, I am from Guatemala, I watch your show since several months ago, I discovered that I already emplemented several tips you showed in the past shows and I keep learning from the recents shows.

My site is http://www.guatemaladigital.com, this is an online electronics store, and thanks to this unconventional marketing, I have could stay out of the crowd doings things like catching and posting good comments of the clients, delivering the products en just 1 hour! for the people in our city (nobody does that), giving gift certificates completely free in their first buy, and maybe our best move, making very easy to buy, you don’t even need to create an account to buy with us. Thanks to that, we are the number 1 electronics store online in Guatemala, starting practically with no budget!

Your show is very useful, it is better than a lot of marketting seminars.

  12. It’s true about businesses proactively caring about their customers. I think a shining example would be Pixar. If you have the time, you should read this blog post about what they did for one of their fans. It’s kind of long, but I got a fuzzy feeling inside from reading it. I’d love it if more businesses followed their example.

Also, a couple of my favorite advertisements:
    Don’t park under this billboard
    Domestic Violence

  13. I really liked Jim and Travis. I will be sure to check out their book, “Gravitational Marketing”, and their show.

Also, Andrew, based on your recent show I’m giving ww.hatchwise.com a go at putting together a professional logo for me. I am really excited about seeing what it produces.

    Thanks,
    David

  18. Andrew, loooove your show and my monthly awesome MWM issues !!!!! I will be the first one to prove to you that my business is truly different…I live in venezuela, and I’m a casting director. My clients hire me to cast models or actors, for the TV commertials they produce. At the moment they only care for the cost of service, basically I call the talent agencies and call the people I believe might be the right one for the spot, record their casting audition and present via online. What can I do different?, they don’t seem to care if I do anything different, they just care about cost and that I don’t repeat the same talents over and over again ! see, in my case, it’s very different ! Let me know what you think !

    Regards !

  21. To the woman who thinks her cranio-sacral naturopathic service business can’t be advertised in the normal way…..use more videos and show results!

  22. You’ve brought into light some very interesting points! This video was quite entertaining, even for someone who isn’t currently trying for entrepreneurship. It got me to thinking about trying at it! If I do decide to venture into the realm of entrepreneurship, I’ll be sure to come back for more tips. Thanks so very much for a very interesting video. I’ll be bookmarking your site. Thanks again!

  23. Sometimes you have to think outside the box and try new things to get noticed. Many services talked about appear to be quite affordable, some even short term, and most definitely worth checking out. I think a lot of small business owners, like myself, are so used to doing it all that they think they don’t need any help, but are missing out on some great opportunities because of it. The show was really great and I got inspired to do a bit of research into some of the marketing services out there. Wish me luck. I’ll be back!

  24. These vids are very useful and pretty amusing.

If you look back at previous posts I explained what is happening with GotBiz.tv.

We’re in a BETA phase which means we’re testing and tweaking constantly. In response to user feedback we’re in the process of redesigning the site to make it more user friendly. New episodes have been released over the last few weeks, just not for every show.

  31. Its a good video to see. I say thanks to andrew to give this good information. Its very important that every businessman should see this.

  32. Rafael,

Re your belief that your business is different… ;)

You have established your business with your own belief that it’s only about the lowest cost. Now, your clients believe that too.

You can buy pears from WalMart or from Harry and David. The difference in price is at least 5x more.

You CAN charge more by providing more value. What else can you bundle in that the clients would come to rely on? Look at your competitors too. What do they offer that you don’t? what do you do better than they do?

Also, remember that most business is done on relationships. Make sure you develop and maintain good relationships. People buy from people they know, like and trust first and foremost. You might THINK that price is the main issue, but if you survey them you might discover differently. If they do reveal that price IS the #1 most important factor, you’ll probably find that if they tried someone else they’d come back to you and admit that price isn’t the most important factor!

    Regards

    Andrew
