I start this week’s show with an amusing exchange between one of those Nigerian scammers and an Australian guy, and it all happened on Skype.

Awhile back Business Week had an issue that featured ‘the pet economy’, which, it turns out is not just big, but HUGE business, and maybe that could include you too?

This week’s question is probably on your mind too – how do you promote your site better? See if the tips I give can be applied to your website.

I love Lifehacker. It’s a difficult to describe blog with an amazing array of useful content. At least, I think so. Let me know what YOU think of it.

The BIG marketing lesson is from M&M’s candies, or is that sweets as we say in Britain? ;) It’s a marketing concept that most businesses can adopt.

Enjoy the show!

  1. This is a really good show but i have just some small tips to give you: FIrst dress a little more professionally this will build up a little credibility and appeal to a wider audience. Second change the into music elevator music is boring (sorry if that came off rude). Third don’t sit behind a desk you look like a suit, have the same stuff playing behind you but stand.
Very informative and i really liked the part about the internet scammer that apologized for sending the “business proposition” to that guy.

    thanks

  3. Hey Andrew, love the bit about the scammer!!

can we get your views on businesses using twitter?
I’m doing a promo on twitter backgrounds at just $7 for the first ten people:
    http://www.phatmarketing.net/blog/2009/07/custom-twitter-backgrounds-for-just-7-dollars/
Hope that helps your viewers grab a bargain!

    Tony.

  4. Hey great edition Andrew!

I particularly liked the scammer bit haha
what are your views on twitter?

    essential for business?
I’m doing a special offer on backgrounds, if anybody is interested, by the way (click my name)

Hope that brings value to your viewers!
    cheers.

  5. Hey Andrew

Great show today as always, well I don’t know what to suggest, you see I wear a suit on my TV show to look more professional, but I get comments telling me to be more casual.

So it appears as we have a good split test going on here, lets compare notes and I am sure we will be able to come up with the correct answer.

    LOL
    Mark

  6. Andrew,

Thanks for reviewing my site. (And not tearing it to shreds!) Insightful comments, and I’ll hash them over with my web guys. The last design was so wacky, we may have swung the pendulum too far the other way.

And forget that silliness about wearing a suit. This was maybe the best t-shirt yet. Your personality is what makes it all work.

    Thanks again. That was fun.

  7. Andrew,

Thanks for reviewing my site. (And not tearing it to shreds!) Insightful comments, and I’ll hash them over with my web team. The last design was so wacky, we may have swung the pendulum too far the other way.

And forget all that nonsense about wearing a suit! This t-shirt was maybe the best yet. Your personality is what makes it all work.

    Thanks again. That was fun.

  8. Really great show.I like it very much but it is better to change that music it is some what boring.By this I get good information.Dress is not so effective

  9. Hi Andrew,

I have to agree with Greg.

Your show is about imparting great content that can be used to improve our online businesses.

With respect to the other comments, it’s really not about the color of your shirt or if you should wear a tie or suit.

    Thanks for the great content.

    Gary

  10. Top quality excellent show as usual Andrew.
I have been a fan since your first shows, but never comment before. Your show is not only excellent content , it is also one of the most professionally produced web shows around.
And to top it all off you still continue to keep this high level of quality week after week.

And please don’t “dress more professionally”. If you do, please go the full hog and wear the slick suit, blonde newsreader style wig and big shiny false teeth! :)

  11. Dear Andrew
Many thanks for a great show as always. Many thanks too for your Guide to Creating Your Own
Video Show – it’s been a great help and I have just launched the preview version of Episode 1 of the Veterinary Business Video Show.
Would very much welcome your feedback

  12. Hi Andrew,

Sorry to say, all I have to say is what everyone else has already said. ANOTHER GREAT SHOW!!!! Its always professionally produced and your own personality is coming through better than ever before, small gaffs and all – which I happen to like. Makes it more real. Once again, a great show and, oh, thanks for those three months of Microwave Marketing. They’re great too!
    Sincerely,
    Ted Robinson

  13. Andrew – Your T-Shirt had the wrong slogan! It should have said “Global Warming – A hoax promoted by politicians, not scientists”

  14. I love the stories in the beginning. The skype fraud was hilarious. I’m not sure if I like the plug for Infusion, but understand the need for advertising. I loved the pet business ideas. Who would have though of braces for pets? The blue text was informative. I thought your advice was spot-on. I even picked up a couple of new bookmarks.

  15. Amla Naik says:

The show was quite amazing. The way you dealt with the topics was wonderful. The only part which i did not like was that your attire should have at least been Semiformal if not Formal. The t-shirt looks like you are into a college.Overall a nice show. CHEERS!!!!!!!!

  16. The “3 for the price of 3″ sign was from when they redecorated 7-11s as a “Kwik-e-Mart” as promotion with opening of the Simpson’s movie.

It was meant as a joke. :)

  20. Thank you Andrew,

Love the shirts. That was something about the person trying to scam the other guy. Good for him for not falling for it.

It is a very good point about M&M and the limited editions. All the other really good points.

We have been with you from the beginning. Enjoy it, get a lot from it. We have even blogged about your show and sent people to check it out. That is how much we enjoy this show. Keep up the good work.

    Dan and Deanna “Marketing Unscrambled”

  21. Tyler,
I surveyed the audience last year and 76% of them voted to keep the t-shirts (see episode #35), so for now they stay ;)

    Christoph,
The QT link should be okay now.

    Tony,
My thoughts on Twitter are very simple. Tweeting every minute of the day with what you’re doing is pointless. On the other hand sharing useful ‘discoveries’ with others via Twitter is an excellent way to build an audience. Like so much in social media, it CAN be a business builder, but it can also be a huge waste of time. Most people adopt the latter either knowingly or unwittingly. P.S. how about a custom background for my profile ;)

    Mark,
I don’t think there’s one right answer about the wardrobe. It really depends on the personality of the presenter and brand of the show. I’m less comfortable in a suit personally, but that’s just me.

    Hi Greg,
You’re a good guy and you deserve every success with your creative melodies, thanks for following the show since the early days, I know you’ve been a loyal supporter.

    Gary, Milt, Rosanita, Amla
Thanks for your kind words, I really appreciate it.

    John,
Congratulations on getting your vet show live, that’s an achievement. Now, be patient because it will take awhile for it to gain traction. You’re clearly knowledgable about the subject – just be careful to make sure that YOUR personality comes through as much as possible. I noticed a few of my phrases in your show, and that’s flattering but it would be better to inject more of yourself in there.

    Glen,
I try and stay out of politics, know what I mean?!

    Monoplex,
    It’s a great sign though, isn’t it?!

    Dan & Deanna,
I appreciate your continued interest and support of the show, thank you so much.

    Regards

    Andrew

  22. Thanks for your comments Andrew – much appreciate your help and now that I have got the ‘mechanics’ sorted I will try to inject more of my own personality into the show
    John

This show is good show. This is the not only show but it gives some proffesional ideas, but i dont like dress.

  25. Very cool show, I’m definitely going to be checking out the rest, and any new ones you put up. I liked how you explained the M&Ms limited edition thing, I never thought of it like that.

I’m going to go check out lifehacker, tubemogul and trafficgeyser now.

  26. Really it is very useful and thanks for your business ideas. I got lot of ideas about buiness that is how to develop the business and how to overcome from ome critical situation. The ideas which you gave is really very useful for my buiness development.

  27. Pinky Posh says:

    Nice show!!!

The topic and the ideas are very well projected. The content is great… what else is required???

  28. sowmyakollace says:

This is the best show to view and the best deals about the market product and more over Andrew is doing such a great job for such things giving some awareness about products, places and some other things easily we can some idea about any kind of product

  29. Thank you for the information on Skype scammers. I often use Skype for my business communication, and I was wondering about the random requests I was getting.

As for comments on the show as a whole: although I found the information a bit disconnected (going from internet scams to prosthetic testicles for dogs), I did find all of the information presented interesting. I’m not sure how exactly it connected to the business information, but it was a good way to lure people into watching the show.

  30. Your voice is boring and monotonous.
I am sure most of the money spent on pets is medical bills and not sellabe products. Last onth I spent $800 on a bone marrow tap, $2100 on a blood transfusion, $900 in blood tests, and $66 in medicated food for my cat. I spent $0 in toys, and will not spend any more until Christmas.
Good tip on limited edition products though. It is always good to spice up your product line.

  31. This is very useful global warning avoid in the world..

  32. Pet ascetics, I love it! Funny and I actually like the way you are dressed, it gives the video more of a humorous and friendly feel. Thanks for the insight. A Lot of great business ideas and niche marketing.

  33. Jason Hadley says:

I thoroughly enjoyed this video. In such a short time, I learned several things, including the following:

    1) Scammers moving over to using Skipe.
    2) Information about Pet economy being $41 Billion dollars.
    3) Loved the info on LifeHacker.com.
    4) Thoroughly enjoyed hearing the info about the Limited Edition promotion by M&M’s.

    Great video!!!

  34. Great transitions – well produced. A lot of good information for the general public. I like the way you were able to communicate specifically about one website or topic, but deliver useful information to anyone tuning in…Thanks!

  35. I don’t think we ever got coconut m&m’s in the States. What a rip-off!

I understand the point, though, about creating interest through a limited special edition. Gotta think about how to apply that in my field.

Cute show! Keep the tee shirt, forget about the suit. It might be fun to see a cohost.

  36. William Potash says:

I like it. I think the scammer didn’t understand English that well. Did you make up the 3 for 3 thing? Try do reduce the stuttering and make it less obvious that you have sponsors. We all know about Lifehacker. You don’t really need to advertise your Britishness.

  37. That was fantastic! I would love to be someones pet- boy they really do have the life. What will they come up with next fur coat and booties for pets? Oh wait they already have! Informative tips on advertising on the web for a business. Also didn’t know about the real strategy on limited editions until now, always wondered why some came back again. Thanks!

  38. Great episode! I personally like the more casual dress. I think it makes it easier for a lot of people to relate.

  39. Hi Andrew,
I ‘m a new comer. It was really an informative video. However, when spoken about the pet business. What i feel is not to waste so much of money for pets.

  40. As always good work, not sure the post about your dress sense is really warranted.

Please keep up the most excellent work.

It’s interesting to note that we really have little like this in the uk. Perhaps that a niche..

  41. Nice Video! This was the first time I watched you and I loved it. You were very entertaining throughout it. The only change I would recommend would be to adjust your lighting a little bit to try to remove your shadow. I guess I need to find something in the pet industry do, appears to be a good source of income for the right product and I saw first hand the benefit of product tests while working for Frito Lay years ago. Look forward to seeing more videos in the future!

  42. GOOD SHOW. TIME ALLOTMENT IS JUST RIGHT. LOTS OF FUNNY MOMENTS. THROWING IN INFORMATION AND WEBSITES OF INTEREST IS REALLY GOOD AS PLUGGINS.I DO PLAN ON TUNING IN

  43. Hi Andrew,
I really enjoyed your video!! You are very funny and keep the viewer interested. I enjoyed learning about some of the websites that are out there available for marketing different businesses as I do have a business and like learning different ways to market it.

I think that your gave a lot of great information and used a lot of great examples. It was very interesting to learn how much people love their animals. I knew people loved them, but not that much!!

I actually do not have any critiques because I think it was great. I am going to bookmark your site so I can see it again!!

    Thanks so much,
    Brooke

  44. Your show is very informative, and you did a great job tying in the advice with some good humor. You kept my attention the entire time. Thanks and keep up the good work! I’ll be sure to tune in again.

  45. Great show. Valuable advice from Andrew. Very useful show for small businessmen who want to grow their businesses.

    Keep it up.

  46. Your show is very useful and andrew done a great job. this is very useful for beginners, who one want to improve their business.

  47. Great podcast. Like the casual look.

I have a concept for a dog leash, resulting from a rash of pet-nappings in the area. Sadly, pets are expensive and some people will resort to theft.

Why not market a leash with a lock on end, so that pets are harder to steal, when you’ve left them outside a store? Most people sloppily tie their pets up, making them easy to walk off with, but lock their bikes up very carefully.

  48. Though it seems to be like a yet another show about the marketing ideas, this video has useful informations. Highly useful for people who look out for marketing techniques. The way they are discussed is simple and interesting. It would have been made more intersting if the video presentation is improved a bit..

  49. Very helpful and useful . dont mind the cloths they look fine. as long as the info is good it dos not matter what you dress like

  50. A good show about the marketing ideas. Andrew is mindblowing. It was really very interesting and informative. I personally feel the music dint get along with the clip other wise on whole it was good.

  51. lisa cole says:

as a first time viewer i will come back again. found what you talked about interesting and liked your accent lol.. found it very funny as an american that as a whole spend so much on pets. i am not one of them so i dont get it either lol

  52. I am part of the pet business in Dubai, UAE and did not know that the US spends so much on it out there. Amazing idea of pet braces!
