2 BIG Announcements for you this week, I wont spoil them for you. Don’t forget to check out the offer from Infusion, who are giving you a free trial of their online marketing management system, it’s what I use to manage my own business.
I show some examples of creative advertising that I think you’ll enjoy. They’re great examples of creative ways to stand out from the crowd and get noticed, and I hope they inspire you.
I receive a lot of questions about how to promote a business for free, and fortunately there are plenty of ways to do it. I’ll show you 4 in this episode.
One way to stand out from the crowd is to use unusual fonts for your logo / website / business cards etc. I’ve discovered a tremendous resource of 10,000 high quality free fonts at www.Fawnt.com
This week’s BIG marketing lesson is from GotoMeeting, the online service that allows 10-15 peope to meetup ‘virtually’ (share their desktop computer screens etc). I was on a Delta flight recently and I received a little card from GotoMeeting on my dinner tray. It was the right message, to the right audience, at the right time. MOST advertising gets this wrong.
Enjoy the show!
Regards,

Another great show Andrew. Your visual examples of good and bad advertising are always helpful. About the show Bad For Business; I look forward to seeing what else these guys do. I think they are a “keeper.”

I liked the Bad for Business segment, but I disagreed with them. I always turn those upside down ads right side up to see what they say. So they work on me.
When I built my website, I did a lot of looking for fonts. Another great resource was 1001freefonts.com

Hi Andrew,
Another good show. Really liked the 4 examples to get publicity for yourself. I can’t wait to hear some more. Regarding Jim and Travis, I follow them too and find most of their stuff useful. However, the 5 foot high guy, Jimmy, can be a little annoying at times. They remind me of Abbott and Costello. See you next time.

The form is there now.

Holy crap!!! WTF was that? I love Jimmy and Travis…they are “piss-terical”…meaning you’re always in danger of peeing a little bit from laughing so hard when you watch their act.
Besides the schtick, they’re both super-smart, expert marketers, and (best of all) down-to-earth nice guys.
Thanks for the preview! Can’t wait for the TV site to go live.
Warm regards,
Pete

Gotbiz.tv; Jimmy and Travis are very entertaining, and I agree with Hal, they do remind me of Abbott and Costello. They definetly held my attention. I would watch more.
You said we cold sign up for the show at the top right of your webpage, but I did not see where?
Enjoy your show!

Amazing show. A few years ago I did a workshop at UCF (Orlando) on a book I was writing. The book is “Slam Dunk Marketing” but at the time it was 3 step marketing. In the audience were these two guys who were very excited about the marketing business. You can imagine my surprise when I found Jimmy and Travis here today.

Andrew. Really enjoy your shows. Curious – because I fly a lot; which Airline were you traveling on when you received the Go To Meeting card. That is a great idea but surprised an airline would want to do anything that might discourage air travel – unless they received some large dollars from Go To Meeting (which they probably did)!

Hi Andrew!
Another good show. The scatological humor in the Bad for Business segment was kind of sophomoric, but if you hold you nose, there’s actually some good information therein. I guess the show will be an acquired taste, or smell.

Bill,
I was travelling on Delta, and you know I never thought about the fact that the message was inappropriate for Delta to be ‘endorsing’. Interesting point. Could be that they didn’t even catch it.
Dan,
It’s interesting because in an informal survey I found about 70% of people wouldn’t turn the magazine over, but 30% would, so I think it must just be different personalities reacting differently. I’m with Jim & Travis, in fact I’d seen the ad before we recorded the episode, and I couldn’t be bothered to turn the ad around, it didn’t give me sufficient reason to. If the headline had been more compelling, with a big benefit for turning the magazine around, I probably would have done. btw, thanks for the font resource.
Doug,
Glad you enjoyed the keeper or crapper segment.
Hal,
I think Jim and Travis are a good example of not being ‘vanilla’ in your business. They polarize the audience and that’s exactly what you want to happen. Try and please everyone and you have something so plain that no one gets excited about it, they can take it or leave it.
Pete,
Glad you liked the sneak preview, thanks for adding your comments.
Anthony,
The ‘sign up’ form is at the top right of this page where it says ‘get free show updates’ – if you add your info you’ll be the first to know everything that’s going on, and I share some cool resources from time to time with everyone through that system, too.
Tim,
Small world, eh? You’ll be seeing a lot more from Jim and Travis on GotBiz.tv – also check out their excellent book, Gravitational Marketing.
Jerry,
I had to look scatalogical up in the dictionary!
Regards
Andrew

Hey Andrew,
I think that the latest update on iTunes might be corrupted. I’ve been trying to download it all day and it keeps erroring out near the end of the file or completes the download but won’t sync.
BTW I love the show, keep them coming.
June 18th, 2009 at 8:30 pm
Yep, you are so right. Thanks for posting this interesting article.

The quick click for Fawnts was worth the whole show.
I am always trying to spice up my sites/publications and these fit the bill just fine.
Keep up the great shows, thanks!

This episode is very useful moment in life goals..

Hi Andrew,
I am confused. At the bottom of each video, every episode, you have a link saying “Buy This Week’s T-Shirt(from National Media Services)”.
But that link goes to a generic page, which you’d probably describe as badly designed and outdated.
What’s the deal?
Thanks!

Andrew, did you just perform one of the great marketing tricks of all time? I’m a major HMBS junky, but I only download from iTunes. I never stop at your website.
Episode #60 absolutely refused to download. Naturally, I came over here; and naturally, I signed up for all kinds of stuff.
A Big Marketing Lesson from Andrew Lock: If the road’s too smooth, nobody will pull over and visit you!

Andrew,
Your content and deconstruction of what it takes to make a commercial Internet TV show rocks!
You definitely think two products ahead.
Thank you for sharing so freely of your best practices!

Loved the “Keeper or Crapper” episode. I laughed myself silly over that one. While I’m not in complete agreement on what they said about that marketing, it was still entertaining. I look forward to seeing more.
Best Regards,
Nathan

Wonderful site with insightful articles. I will make use of most of this information.

I had to go to your website to see this episode. For some reason, my Zune downloading shows a little yellow exclamation point next to the episodes about once a month. I did on this one. I didn’t like the Bad for Business guys at all. I thought their message could have been handled a lot more tastefully. Thanks for the disclaimer. It was well-needed.

just realized i posted twice, sorry about that!

This episode is really very creative. One of the most powerful marketing tools is free publicity. Free publicity is the process of getting your product, service or company featured on TV, radio, magazines, newspapers and online.
