Episode #53 – Things To Be Thankful For, What To Do If Google Adwords Is Too Expensive For You, a Couple Of Resources For Gadget Geeks, and a Big Marketing Lesson From KFC.
April 28, 2009Episode #53 – “Escapee – 9 to 5!’”
Websites and resources mentioned in the show:
The Continuity Summit (details to join me in Stamford, CT May 15-17th.)
KeywordTopia (best resource for finding longtail keywords)
GeekBrief (daily WebTV show for gadget geeks)
Tekzilla (weekly show about technology and other geeky stuff)
NiftyClicks (discover the very latest web tools and resources)
Get a Private Telephone Consultation with me (to Help YOUR Business)
Buy This Week’s T-Shirt(from National Media Services)
I’m back! I’m sorry that you may not have received my email message about why there was no show last week. Simple reason – I had completed a years worth of shows and I felt I deserved a week off! Back to the usual weekly schedule now!
With all the ‘might as well end it now’ doom and gloom accompanying this recession I figured you could use some cheerin’ up, so I want you to watch a clip from one of the late night chat shows that helps to put things into perspective – in a very humorous way (at least I found it funny – hope you do too).
In episode #44 I shared the news about the British restaurant owner who decided to let customers pay whatever they liked for their meal. Shimoda, a regular viewer based in New York jumped on the idea, made a postcard with a ‘name your own price’ offer, and sent it out to customers of her jewelry products. The response was great, and I applaud Shimoda for taking action, so I’m also rewarding her with 3 months of ‘Microwave Marketing’.
I have two favorite WebTV shows. First up, Geekbrief.tv, a daily show featuring Cali Lewis and all things geeky. It’s a great show, fast moving and entertaining. Congrats to Cali for making it to the final rounds of the ‘best job in the world’ competition in Australia.
Finally, the BIG marketing lesson is from KFC, aka Kentucky Fried Chicken. They’ve been smart enough to tie their marketing into both local and national news. I’ll share the strategy with you in this episode, and remember, you can do the same in your business.
Let me know (by posting a comment on this blog) if YOU have managed to integrate news of any kind into YOUR marketing.
Enjoy!
Regards,

Thanks for a great post as usual. I think the one about the tools on long tail keywords was most useful for me.
More power to you and i look forward to your next show!

I agree with Jackie…another great show. I am definitely going to check out the long tail keywords tool…and it’s 30 day free trial!
What was the meaning behind the “Escapee” t-shirt?
Missed you last week!

I found an insert in the paper for a carpet cleaning company. It was blank on the back side. I called the company and asked if they would like to repeat the same insert at half the price. They said yes and we inquired if there was an additional cost for printing on the back side. They said no and we proceeded to place our ad for residential cleaning on that side. This was a real win-win. The costs were cut in half and we all produced sales.

Wow Tim, nice work! Pretty useful strategy. I really like the idea of teaming up with other members of the community and pooling resources and potential clients. Thanks Andrew. And I don’t care what Barack Obama says about it, I love this show

Jimm,
You didn’t read the show notes, did you?!
The t-shirt reads ‘Escapee – 9 to 5′ – that describes me, and hopefully you?
Tim,
Great job with that idea. That’s the kind of smart thinking and innovation that we need to see more of in this economy.
Thanks to everyone else that commented.

Andrew

I was shocked and thrilled to see that you mentioned and showed my postcard on your show. I will be doing that type of offer again in the future. My clients loved it.
I love your show. Thanks for the ideas.

Hi,
A couple of my users reported that your latest episode wasn’t working on their devices. I checked out the feed and it looks like the latest episode published an swf file instead of the usual mp4 file. (See this link http://feeds2.feedburner.com/helpmybusiness?format=xml )
Is this a permanent change or is the another feed we can use for mobile devices?
Thanks!

Hi Marcus,
That’s odd, I’ll have my tech guy look at that to see what’s going on with it.

Many thanks for answering my question, Andrew!
I’ll have to try using long-tail keywords.
I actually never thought about it carefully enough, the more targeted the keyword, the cheaper the ad (less competition) and the higher the conversion rate (would be more targeted to what the user is searching for).
Many thanks for answering my question!
