Episode #17 - Dell are not in my good books.  I ordered a NEW 24″ LCD monitor and it turned up faulty.  When they sent a replacement, it was a refurbished unit!  Has anything like that happened to you?  Do you know someone that works for Dell?  It’s unacceptable!

The viewer question relates to how to use video to promote an online business.  I present 4 methods for you to implement.

The nifty click is a resource that enables you to acquire a ready made TV commercial for just $499!

Finally, the BIG marketing lesson comes from UPS, the courier company.  It’s not a happy story, and it highlights a classic problem that many large companies have.  UPS need to get their act together!

sorry to hear about Dell, I am shocked that a company of such a reputation would have such an INSANE refund / return policy…even if it was the smallest company in the world, how insane!

That’s a great way to lose customers!

I’m about to snag a new lap top, I have a Dell, but, I make movies for my blog, use micrsoft word, excel, etc -

would you reccomend Dell still, or going for an apple mac?

I’m looking for an all in one.

    Thanks Andrew!

  2. More interesting insights, Andrew… especially the ones about the bad policies of Dell and UPS. Thanks for sharing. :-)

  3. I don’t believe in bad luck, so is there any chance you’re cursed? I think I’d want to tear someone’s head off in both of the examples you cited.

I can’t believe such “reputable” companies could be so quick to abdicate their whole reason for existence - serving their customers!

Seriously, I think someone may have put a hex on you. I’d recommend a voodoo doll or rabbit’s foot to keep you safe in the future. At least they’d be more reliable than the customer service policies of these companies. I imagine this is hanging in all of their offices: http://despair.com/disservice1.html

  4. Andrew,

I’ve seen that Dell policy before and it’s kept me from purchasing a Dell.

I actually know 2 people who work for Dell in Nashville and they hate that policy! One said he feels bad for people who get less than what they paid for.

Interestingly enough both of them own Macs!

  5. Andrew - your shows just keep getting better and better! Good job!

I’m quite tempted to start posting them on my blog.

  6. Andrew,

What Dell is doing is ridiculous. I can not believe it. Why don’t you play their game? As your item arrived faulty, you are entitled to a full refund, and return of the item at their expense (here in the UK, at least). Then just order a new one. Here in the UK we have something called Consumer Direct:

    http://www.consumerdirect.gov.uk/

“Consumer Direct is the government-funded telephone and online service offering information and advice on consumer issues. Consumer Direct is funded by the Office of Fair Trading and delivered in partnership with Local Authority Trading Standards Services.”

Great for any such disputes - they will tell you what your legal rights are and if the terms of the contract are unfair and thus void.

Shame on UPS. Franchising is horrible. Again - you need to know your rights, Andrew, and I am sure that despite you being in the USA, you have many such rights as a consumer. Use them! Complain! Or, make a video about it and post in here - that’s also great! :)

    Thanks again,
    Lisa

  7. Hi Andrew

a real eye opener there with your UPS ‘exposé’. I am as incredulous as you that ANY company can arrive at such potentially damaging policy decisions let alone a company that’s a household name. Sadly, ‘Sod The Customer’ as a policy is not uncommon and like you I make sure people know about my experience and I NEVER go back…

    Regards

    Neil.

  8. Thanks for your concern everyone! It really is unbelievable that companies like Dell and UPS have such ridiculous policies.

Remember, everything is marketing and marketing is everything. Little do they realize that their actions in these areas DIRECTLY relate to my (and now your) perception of these buinesses.

  9. Andrew - thanks again for yet another informative show. I also have found that the USPS insurance is nothing more than a scam as I have never been able to collect! Good to know about UPS as well.

I appreciate all of the nifty clicks and wonder how you find them? It is truly amazing that you have a new one every single week! Thanks, Mimi

PS my business is going out of business - sadly - but I am hoping to rise from the ashes eventually

  11. Margarets comment says:

    WOW!!
I have had dealings with Dell over the years and had no trouble at all
I’m so happy that it didn’t happen to me

I agree that there return policy should be changed—Thats terrible

  12. Sadly dissappointed with Dell says:

Dell sucks. I purchased a controller card and spent two weeks trying to get it to work. Finally, I decided to return the card and use the onboard storage controller. Dell refused to take the controller card back because it was out of the 21 day warranty…it was completely ridiculous.

  13. Andrew,

Great Stuff, any video software that you could recommend?
