Its been a really busy summer, as I’ve been touring and teaching small business owners around the world.  Lotsa fun, tthough, and great to meet so many entrepreneurs.

Have you seen the new tourism ad for London and the UK?  They want to promote the UK as a destination, especially with the Olympics coming up next year.  However, the riots have caused us to take the liberty of showing a re-edited, more accurate ad.  Let me know your thoughts ;)

Every business owner wants to be noticed more, to make more sales, and the fundamental requirement is of course marketing.  I’ll share some specific tips that you can adapt for your industry, that will help you stand out from the crowd.

Outsourcing is a hot topic these days and I want to help you get more done, so I share a great outsourcing resource that has similarities with Fiverr, which I featured in episode 100.  Remember?  Sure you do.

Finally in this episode, I focus in on a big marketing lesson from 5 Guys Burgers and Fries, a U.S. based burger chain that’s going from strength to strength, opening new outlets all over the country in an accelerated fashion.  It’s an

  1. WAS previously an In-and-Out burger guy, but I like 5 guys better.

Even though I live in Arizona and there are In and Out burger joints everywhere, I go the extra mile for 5 Guys.

  2. IN and OUT for sure. Wish they were in Texas.

  3. Glad to have you back.

I’m an In & Out Burger Fan. Five Guys is making a bug mistake by not having a drive-thru in California. Most live in the cars here in the Golden state.
As for quality, both are good in my opinion, but In & Out has better fries.

  4. Andrew, I haven’t seen the show in awhile (not sure why you haven’t shown up in my inbox lately) but it was like coming back to an old friend. You’re as entertaining and engaging as ever, and the content is great as always.

Although I will say your riff on the London video was a bit disturbing. I thought the original video was quite impressive, and, well, you pretty much trashed it. If you were going for humor, it didn’t work (for me), and if you weren’t going for humor, I guess it did work.

That said, I enjoyed the show and the great marketing points re the guitarist, zeerk, and 5 guys. Got a couple of ideas for my newsletter, so thanks.

Have you done anything on Facebook “fan” pages? I know it’s a whole world unto itself, but maybe there are a few tips you could give for general help, or maybe even do a whole show on them?

    Keep up the great work!

    (I still miss the t-shirts…)

    Greg

  5. Andrew, I am angry with you about the video you altered. Not good mate. It was not funny and was in very poor taste. You did not follow up with any comment to say if it was a funny or if you were trying to make a statement about the situation? As I am based on the east side of London, these times are still raw and we are trying to address these problems. Your show does not help. I hope you can extend an apology to London for what you have done. We are working very hard to ensure 2012 is a great event and our guests/visitors have a fantastic time.

  6. I have to say, I was a little surprised with the “comedy” sketch on the British advert. I get what you are trying to say, the timing of the commercial along with the recent events is a problem for British tourism, but I might have made a much shorter version, or used this as some kind of lesson on “Marketing during a Crisis” !

On another note, I’ve been to 5 Guys, they have become a favorite in our family, however since I am a vegetarian I have tried ordering the grilled cheese there and it is horrific. All the meat-lovers in the family are quite satisfied though, and the peanuts are great. Some day I will get to an In and Out…

And adding to that someday… my personal goal is to be able to afford a conference or boot camp with you, I am sure I would learn a LOT. I always do with your pod casts!

  7. Liked the bloopers at the end… adds a touch of realism!

  8. Re your re-edit…
    I’m British
    I’m offended
    I’m not amused
You’ve got it wrong BIG time
You’re not funny – that was in bad taste
    I’m unsubscribing

  9. Sad re-do, man. Love Britain, love the people, the history and the traditions. Not amusing, not necessary and certainly not helpful to those of us who stopped by to learn from you. Be a pro, Pull that video down. Cherio

  10. Claire mcbey says:

I’m sorry but was slightly offended by the video re edit. I am massively proud to be Scottish and this did not happen here. It happened sadly in England. Britian consists of four countries and in 3 of them where untouched by the few days of riots. In the end it was the strong community spirit that drove the young kids back indoors. Now England are doing everything they can to ensure this will never happen again.

Im sure nothing like that has ever happened in America?

  11. Andrew Lock says:

Folks, the tourism was meant to be irony, not comedy. Apologies if you found it offensive, you surely know thats not my intention here.

From the stateside perspective, the riots HAVE affected peoples opinions about travelling to Britain, to such an extent that this (original) ad has been pulled until further notice. The re-edited ad has been shown frequently on American TV news channels recently to highligjt how perception sometimes overtakes reality.

The reality of course is that few foreign visitors to the UK would be, or are affected by riots.

    Regards

    Andrew

  12. Claire mcbey says:

Sorry Andrew but all that highlights is how ignorant Americans are to the the world outside them. And I don’t believe that is your intention either.

  13. Andrew, I’ve been watching your show since the fifties (episode # that is…) and really enjoy it. Was truly sorry to see your edited ad-not a shining moment for “Help My Business..” Also, not a fan of the live studio audience. IMO as an internet viewer, it lowers the standard of your show and takes time away from valuable content. Won’t keep me from coming back, though. Thanks for sharing your unique tips, tricks and talents. CH

  14. Grazyna, Huntfield Heights, Australia says:

    Hi Andrew,

Thank you for your best tips.

Inh Adelaide we have no In and Out burgers and no 5 Guys. I’m not are fast food person.
Thanks again and I can’t waite for your next time episoe.

    See you next time.

    Grazyna (Grace)

  15. Never been to Five Guys, although we DO have two here in Wichita, Kansas. To tell the truth, the first time I saw the “Five Guys” sign above some dark windows in a strip mall, I had NO idea exactly WHAT the business was all about! My 15-year-old son had to fill me in. Hmmmm….maybe the word “Burgers” would be helpful on the sign.

As for In & Out…..Andrew, it was totally due to your “coverage” of it during one of your episodes that made me seek one out during a recent trip to Valencia, California. YUM!!!

    Linda

  16. Stephen C Haskins says:

Andrew, I love your videos and I purchased your Nifty Clicks DVD (have not yet joined the website but I will).
I live in Southern California and we just recently got our first Five Guys in my area (I first heard of them a few months prior on CNBC). In regard to Five Guys/In and Out comparison I can only speak to In and Out as Five Guys has been so busy every time we go there that my girlfriend has been unwilling to wait. In my opinion, despite what ever lofty goals they may have, In and Out is inferior to even McDonalds or Burger King—the fries are always soggy and uninviting and the burger is nothing special AT ALL. My opinion seems to be a minority view as I do hear people RAVE about In and Out and they always seem to be busy but I just don’t see it. To me, if there is nowhere else to eat and I am REALLY hungry I might reluctantly go to In and Out.
On a totally unrelated subject, do you have any plans to offer a more basic video training for people who are not yet ready to invest in your full home study package?

  17. Hi Andrew
I am in the crowd-sourcing and out-sourcing business since i was teen and what i realized is that learning is more easy than earning.
But it is a Great Video
    and thanks for the tips.

  18. gulshan kumar says:

  19. Hi Andrew,
This is my first experience ever where i came to know about improving the expertise in online business.Am really thankful to you for giving such a wonderful show video. Its truly a great stuff.I hope i could make use of this information effectively.

  20. Mini Balakrishnan says:

I enjoy watching the video.Very informative,How to make money in 5.com

  21. Rituraj Yadav says:

Extremely insightful video. I think I have learnt a lot from these 18 minutes and I’m sure I will utilize the tips to cater my business and hopefully see it grow bigger.

  22. hi
i like your video a lot because i m also quite interested in business. The idea of designing of website is very good. The word of expertise is also excellent.

  23. In&Out is my favorite with the note that I have never been to a 5 guys restaurant.

  24. Hi Andrew,
This is the first time I’m watching your video and I’m really happy to watch your video and I’ve gained many aspects about the marketing strategies. One thing I just loved is that about one of your point i.e differentiality and thinking differently is also my concept of living.Be unique that’s what I believe in.After seeing your video I’m just feeling little guilty because I’ve missed 144 episodes of your’s. I don’t know about IN N OUT but as you’ve shown FIVE GUYS are good.I liked everything of your video but expect the criticizing part of the Britain country because in that clip its representing a Nation and that may hurt the feelings of their citizens. Finally I’ve gained much getting to know about your tips.Thank you.

  25. andrew i like ur show it is very helpfull for me too i like ur method of marketting not only ur show it is very cute hai its for ur cartoon your representation of money making is very nice andrew

  26. hi andrew:
i am first time watching this type of video. i am pointing out a certain thing which may had not been pointed out by anybody else. if you watch the video closely, the anchor person who starts briefing carries a voice like a women. It gives a feeling that a women is talking about something rather than a man.
although the other information is good about the subject.a good marketing lesson by five guys.

  27. 5 guys has a fantastic business model. They slowly have been growing with the use of good customer support and most importantly good food!

  28. SUNIL KUMAR S says:

i am a businessman and actually loved the way you presented the video. Felt little funny in the beginning but enjoyed the video as it went.
it really provided some good marketing information. Hope the strategy used was good enough to attract the viewers.

  29. I found this to be very informative. I especially like the business-oriented information. As a student, i think the part about making a new website while making money sounds interesting and something i might try out later.

I know some people may be a bit ticked off by the video, however, they don’t realize that it was an approach to present a bad situation in a light and humorous way.

    Nice show.

  30. Andrew,
Great show! I have your book “The Next Best Thing”
    lots of great info, Thanks.
You really are enjoyable seen live also. The Ultimate Internet Boot camp, how else can I say it. It Rocked!!!

    Sincerely,

  31. Andrew;
Your remake makes me want to do one for the states.
5 guys- never been. Might, but have to ask the wife.

after receiving your tee shirt 3 years ago (guess) I have been just such a fan. Thanks for all you do.

    Frank

  32. This is a screamingly funny video and at the same time a bit intriguing. But still, I live in London, and the fact is that these things don’t apply to what the situation really is over here. I’m looking forward for your next after-thought new video.
    Cheers.

    Andy

  33. narayanaswamy says:

I think that re editing the ad about invitation to Britain was totally unnecessary.Saying ‘No’ to ideas and putting them aside was a really useful tip.I have lot of ideas to start business of my own,but my financial situation is not stable,so now i know to put aside my idea and take i back up when i’m financially stable. That tip for guitarist , that anything for “free” gets through to people and can be used for any business.

  34. Secret Shopper says:

    Hello,

I can vouch for one of the audits… I am a “mystery shopper” and Five Guys is one of the restaurants I regularly do dining audits… great food and they do work hard to maintain the quality, cleanliness and friendly service… plus it is really cool to get to eat free!

    Cheers,

can’t reveal my identy – cuz I want to continue to be a “shopper”

  35. Very informative video and this is the first time I watched this video, It provides some great marketing tips.

  36. Wonderful advice. I especially like the idea of writing down your ideas to save for a later time. I have a hard time focusing on a single task when a great idea pops in my mind. Writing it down was a great idea, to clear it and come back to it. Also to compile a continuing list of ideas to scour through later down the road and evaluate whether your idea was good and worth perusing or if it was simply just an idea without potential. Thank you for your advice. BTW I found the travel invitation video hilarious.

  37. Existing without the presence of solutions to the problems you have resolved through your main guide is a crucial case, as well as the ones that would have in a negative way affected my entire career if I hadn’t discovered your site.

  38. Thanks Andrew for sharing this informative video.. I enjoyed it and Thanks for the useful tips..:-)

  39. Really, this stacking of all the live images of very ‘attractive’ London, is really awesome and well, it just shows the need for my services – teaching more about yoga and meditaton – is very necessary. Thanks Andrew for another fun show.

  40. lavanya senthil says:

  44. Waleed Bin Asif says:

well i have seen the video bt actually i liked the first clip before editing because it was fascinating and attracting but in the re-editing ,looking fire and burning evrywhere wasn’t a good thing to see at all….all and all it was a good effort an dsurely will help the viewers as well

  47. As I am too related to marketing,so i got some idea from this interesting video.
    Thanks.

  48. Quite creative, that “You are invited video”. Unfortunately we live in a society where everything is like that. The truth, the problems that are actually worth paying attention to are kind of left aside. Congratulations on that Internet boot camp, that is of tremendous help to young students who want to start their project up. What was really helpful to me was the “learning how to say no” part of the video. I’ve always had a problem of “choosing my battles”. And that did not go well for me.

  49. It is very good video, which help me very well. This will help me to earn through business.

  50. The part about saying NO to yourself has made quite an impression on me. Even though I am not an entrepreneur, thats advice I will follow.

  61. Joseph Cherukara says:

Good, informative video. Learned some lessons on marketing.

  62. Great marketing lesson. Always remember that marketing is all about analyzing the needs and wants of the customer and obtaining the information necessary for sales. The final outcome is always an exchange of goods and services. Never forget that for a firm to survive in a competitive environment, a clean understanding of the customer is essential.

  77. Being someone who has been struggling badly to bring his small business up and running, I would like to thank you for giving me an opportunity to watch this fantastic video. Forget about whatever drawbacks this video has on the technical or creative side, I must admit that it was a refreshing experience, kind of a wake up call for me. Those 18 precious minutes are going to be life changing moments, at least for me.

The video underlines the fact that a touch of humor would always increase the enthusiasm, no matter how serious is the topic you are discussing. Anywise, thanks for this very informative and useful video.

  78. I am sure that I could have been grow my business with this video. 82. Hi Andrew,
This video is highly beneficial for people to get recognized in their business. This 18 minute video provides deep knowledge of marketing strategy. Also a bit of comedy in between is good.

  83. Branz Huota says:

I liked this show. It’s not like the typical business shows that are mostly boring. At least this show can keep my attention, as well as teach me a thing or two .

  84. My men had been warmed to see them and have quite simply been making the most of them.

  85. I thought the video content was a little too dumbed down apart from the peice about 5 Guys. Personally, I’ve never heard of 5 Guys or In and Out Burger as I live outside the US and found it interesting. The London video was a bit of a cheap shot and I’m not a Brit. The out-takes at the end was a nice touch but if you want to take this video to a wider audience you need to watch the pronunciation.

  86. Rama Krishna A says:

Excellent Video on “How a Business Noticed More, etc” . It definitely helps to start my new online business. The way the presentation carried was excellent. At each and every point you people showed how big you are and different from other marketing advisers.

Superb video with valuable advise on how to market your talent and your business. I really liked the following tips which will make life a lot easier:
1] When an idea comes, write everything down
2] Gracefully say NO to others and finally
3] Examine what your competitors are doing but create your own.

Rating: ***** [5 Stars - It is just great, fabulous, fantastic!!!!! ]

  90. Thanks Andrew, for the simple lesson illustrating the point “there is always room for one more” if you are “different”. But why the parody in the beginning with London Olympics, showing recent unfortunate communal clashes in all its gory details? I couldn’t get the link to the agenda point, may be I have tunnel vision!
Overall a point well covered and driven home.
    Joffy

  91. the re-edited ad was a good one. but seriously now, uk must solve it’s social problems urgently if they want to have a peaceful olympics

Woowww very good information that this program is given to improve the business. Good advises that are going to help business.

  106. Yes, I agree, giving a free offer is always a great idea to help drive sales, but not just in the music biz. Giving customers a trial allows them to see the quality of your work and it will pay off in the long run.

  107. Even here in Australia where we have been traditional opponents of our mother country (England) your editing of the British Tourism advert is only significant in how bad taste is unacceptable. I am not sure what message you had in mind when you created and/or published this – it’s certainly not funny. Every communication has a purpose. What was yours? Also leaving the tourism logo on the clip would seem to be misuse of somebody else’s IP. You’ve disappointed one loyal fan/subscriber.

  111. Hi Andrew,
I’ve seen many videos related with techniques to improve the business. This one stands out. The techniques shared here, like giving a free offer can be applied globally, to any business. The cons I saw here are the bad editing of the video, bad humor and a bit famine voice. Overall, the content seems to be good.

  112. This video is really wonderful and helpful for make money and great idea. It’s a different from other website to make money

  113. interesting video, about this zeerk.com – it looks not so promising, people are offering services which could be found on the internet for free. but anyway – thanks!

  119. Anly Antony says:

    Hi,

The overall video was pretty good. It gives really thoughtful ideas for a fresher in business. We are expecting more information and tips.

  120. I like the video. It was interesting; I think the English accent aided in keeping my attention. If shock value was a part of the purpose, then Yiippee! You did it. On another note, I was able to gain some business sense.

  121. Interesting and useful comments on marketing. The bloopers were funny, too. I liked the commercial near the first of the video. The graphics of London (?) looked pretty sweet. Was that Jamie Oliver I saw? I guess I’d have to say I like “5 Guys”, since we don’t have an In-and-Out in our town and I have never been to one before.

  122. Hi,
The video was very useful to me because I am really interesting in earning money. The idea given to design a website and earning money from it is very appealing to me.

  123. Hi,
this video was very helpful , would help some people who want to earn money ! its really good , appreciated for it !

  124. this video is informative….. but they should not have made a mockery of London… otherwise is good

  125. I enjoyed the show especially the first mockery of London, you are invited. According to me it will surely help people to earn money. I found this one very different and unique from other websites of making money. Good work, keep it up.
    Thank you.

  126. I really appreciated the way video is designed it more like interactive . Not only is Andrew’s enthusiasm infectious, I’ve learned some really useful things. Thanks A1UJ3MRDWDPACY

  127. I really like this programme, already watched a few of them and I found them really useful. Presenter in funny but clever way shows how to improve, but also how to keep smart. They also add nice examples of another ads videos. I think it’s worthy to watch more than one time.

  128. I loved the your invited to London portion of this web site. It really puts a twist as a cover. I find that the really garbed my attention. This a program that I would love to watch all the time. I am so glad I ran into this website. I plan to tell all my friends about it.

  129. Extremely insightful video.
i have been having the same problem of no visits. I think I have learnt a lot from these 18 minutes and I’m sure I will utilize the tips to make my business and hopefully see it grow bigger.

  130. I was amused by the British Invitation. It was ironic; the violence was “fresh” in light of the staid and steady British rhetoric. It takes courage to be violent especially when one’s government is mired in protocol and courtesy.

I loved this show. I am a marketing/business novice and wish to remain so. However, I found Andrew reasonably engaging (is his accent genuine? really?) and the say “no to self” clip helpful. I am from Virginia. I have never visited a 5Guys, but there is one in my town. I want to visit them after watching this show. I have never heard of In and Out.

I am intrigued by http://www.zeerk.com, and will investigate.

  131. Hey, great show. My first thought of such shows about advice on business/marketing as dry. But this one is quite interesting and catching. I like the accent of the host ;)
And then the funny parody about a British tourism ad. I don’t like violence but a bit of sarcasm goes a long way…
In sum an interesting show where I would go to if I want to learn more about marketing and business for the little guy! And at the very end some mishaps from the host, so it pays to watch till the very end.

  132. It’s awesome views in this video on business promotions. But rreally great ways u can see in http://www.admaxim.blogspot.com

  133. its good and intresting video about how to make money by using web sites

  134. The show wasn’t funny to comment. The work was great with the 5 guys. The show was really interesting and useful. this gives tips for keeping my business noticed for ever.

  135. Subhimagesh says:

This is really informative video and for sure it also motivates the people wanting to start their own business, with the ways of working on an idea… Of course the first mockery of London, you are invited was also a bit funny to see…

  136. Its looking like an interesting year for me. I am just past my first 12 months and things are picking up well. My primary focus now is on getting more ‘retainer’ customers (people with high loyalty and ability to pay for regular support), and also to make more of a foray to supporting small businesses on maintenance contracts. Its all about getting a regular income to grow the business from for me right now. My current focus is squarely on SEO. Ive paid out thousands this year on Adwords, and am just fed up with the amount of money it costs and can see it will just keep costing. It has been very effective, but if I can get my site on page one and high up, the maintenance costs should hopefully be lower than throwing money into Adwords in perpetuity. So Im putting money into backlink building, optimising my Site and my Google Places/Maps result. I also bought a new car last month and plan to get it wrapped in signage. I want to get this done in the next month or two. Its my shopfront, and I think the professional image it will portray will be a solid asset to my business. Not sure if the ‘on road’ advertising will bring in business, but I think Image is important for referral and return custom, and thats the goal with this particular investment.
However, having spoken to some people who have used this form of marketing, Ive been told that the most effective method is to keep ‘hitting’ the target area with the advertising material in a regular drop. Eventually people get used to seeing the fliers and start to take notice of them (thats the theory, anyway). The thing I like about this prospect is the high degree of geographical targetting it allows for – which is obviously crucial for a mobile repair service. Close, moneyed areas are where the best customers are for me.

  137. Good

  138. It’s awesome views in this video on business promotions.

  139. It was a nice information provided there…..I would like to see more videos of this, if available.

  140. Ankit Kumar Singh says:

Well the video was very informative full of facts and a good learning should be taken from it especially about the ideas that how it can make us great. Writing down the ideas on paper was a good practice to be done. The story of 5 guys was also very interesting and inspirational that how effectively one should copy others’ ideas. The thing is we should show people what actually they want to see.

  141. shreyan manerkar says:

    hi,
am watching the show by andrew lock for the first time, and i seemed to have liked it. The technique of postponing things you like to do is nice, by this technique the plans made for a day or week is not disturbed and the bussiness stratergy, of doing things in a unique way in an existing bussiness is actually good.

  142. I felt confidence after watching this video,This is a useful video for Those who really struggling in their buisness like me……..

  143. Hello, Neat post. There’s a problem together with your web site in internet explorer, could test this? IE still is the market leader and a big element of other people will leave out your great writing because of this problem.
