Ask a Question (about small business marketing – you could be featured on the show)

Have you noticed the trend for airlines to install and offer wi-fi on their planes?  Delta and Virgin America seem to be first in on the act, but others are following.  Although I am somewhat of a gadget geek and enjoy being connected, I also happen to like the times when I’m forced to be disconnected, as on flights.  So, with this new trend, I’m wondering if there’ll soon be anywhere on the planet where we can’t be reached?  Does this concern you?  Do you believe we should or should not have wi-fi on planes?

This week’s ‘ask andrew’ question is all about how to get reliable video streaming.  It’s worth reminding ourselves that online video is nothing short of a miracle – considering the size of the information that’s being forced down a tiny copper cable every few milliseconds.  We’ve already taken it for granted, yet the technology still needs to settle down for a more consistent experience.

I like to keep up on current events, news and trends, but I get fed up of the obvious bias from the majors – CNN, FOX, ABC etc.  Then I discovered TheDailyBeast.com which is doing a phenomenal job at keeping the news brief, to the point, entertaining, and enlightening.  Frankly, it’s a completely different experience of news consumption, and I’d like to share it with you as this week’s Nifty Click resource.

Our BIG marketing lesson comes from Blender, a music magazine that’s been around for a few years now.  This is an example of what NOT to do, as demonstrated by their awful (in my opinion) subscription renewal form.  I think you’ll be shocked when you see it.

As usual, let me know your opinion about the topics covered in the show to help your small business this week – leave your comment below, it’s really easy to do, no registration required.

    Hi Andrew,

There seems to be a problem with the video loading.

    Cheers

  2. i too cannot load the video at 6:28 am EDT

  3. It does eventually load, but took about 10 minutes to start when i left the window open having first clicked play

  4. It’s pretty ironic that there’s a segment on getting reliable video streaming.

Also, the question on whether to have wifi on a plane is pretty weak. People keep to themselves on flights anyway and you can do what you want.

  5. I also had trouble loading…but it was worth the wait…thanks, Andrew. Love your show.

  6. Waited 10 minutes, video did not load. Willtry again later.

    P S Love your show!

  7. Slow Mo Video

  8. Same problem! Could it have anything to do with the pop-up that is trying to load at the same time?

  9. Wi-Fi on planes. Is it not simply a matter of choice – You choose! Nothing compels you to turn on your computer, iphone, Blackbery etc. If you want to rest leave it off! If you want to be connected, Turn it off. Personally I like to work on the plane, where hopefully I will be uninterrupted. It is an ideal time to do research. My experience is that if you are just sitting there resting, someone will begin a conversation! which may be what someone wants. It all come down to your choice!

  10. video does not play

  11. SkyWiFi: I like to use flying time to think. Occasionally, I will use a voice recorder or pencil-and-paper. If the computer is open, the tendency to use stream-of-consciousness site-hopping is too appealing. Problem is with seat-mates who insist on working feverishly and muttering about emails read or composed.

Have not yet experienced a passenger talking on a cell (airline’s or their own) but hope to see “cell-free seating areas” in the future.

I suggest that Dave Crenshaw (still on board?)give a presentation on various “business-news-synopsis services” available.
    Look forward to episode #124!

  12. Anticipation,
Waiting for your video to download is like
turning an old bottle of Ketchup upside down.

It’s certainly not due to my super fast optical
    “Fios” provider.

  13. The irony of the video being slow to load is not lost on me, trust me!

It seems like its loading the whole thing before playing, for some reason.

Bear with us and we’ll see what we can do about it.

    Regards

    Andrew

  14. The loading seems okay now, let me know.

    Andrew

  15. Personally, I’m with you on this on Andrew, peace and quiet, in fact, I’d like to see them install those tube beds on the plane where you can shut out the world for a nap, possibly with a parachute attached in case of an emergency, you would be swooshed out the plane and land safely without trying to get out of that tube. :)

  16. It should be up to the individual passenger to decide. For me, I could be more productive with wifi on planes. I would much rather put on headphones, catch up on email or surf the internet rather than hear some screaming baby down the aisle.

  17. As always – good content. Just a bit buggy today but great message as usual. Regarding downloading issues I do as you suggest and allow for all my video to buffer. The reason being is I watch all of them at 2X the speed to get done with them quicker. I use Enounce and it is a great way to get the info you need at up to 3X faster.

    Hi Andrew!
Wifi on airplanes? I vote NO. So much of modern technology just keeps us on an electronic leash to the business world. We all need some time to put our minds on hold, relax and smell the weather.
Your recommendation of BlueHost is spot on. They’re my web host and the service is excellent across the board. Economical, too. They’re even recommended by WordPress to host blogs.
A word of caution: use your discretion with the Daily Beast. It’s a highly partisan site.

  19. Hi Andrew,

I’m from Australia and generally have no problems watching your program on ADSL. On the odd occasion when it’s a “little slower” I press play and then pause for about 20 seconds – Works perfectly.

As to Wifi on planes, I fly every week and I say NO. I enjoy this time for myself.

Thanks for your wonderful show. Keep up the good work.

  20. What happened to the 1-minute red/blond headed guy on your series? I can’t remember his name, but I do remember his energy being absent from today’s show.

  21. Hi Andrew,
I think that wifi in plane could be a good idea especially when you have long trip and you are tired of watching movie or listenning to music.
    Thanks for the show!!
    always really interesting
    Linda G.

  22. Zappos? I don’t know – probably around the $25,000 mark :-)

As for Wifi on planes – My kids call me “BA” Sucker.
I ain’t goin nowhere near them dang things :-)

Do I understand my customer? – Of course I do.

I just think they don’t understand ME!! :-)

    Keep em comin’ Pete.

  23. Hi Andrew!
Thank you for the always entertaining and useful videos.
In my opinion, wi-fi should be available on planes if there’s a demand. No one has to get online if they don’t want to and passengers who’d prefer getting online, would be able to.
I personally find that the 16-hour trip to Hungary is pretty long and I might want to take advantage of that time to work on my UIBC website. :)

  24. Zappos offers 3000.00 to NOT keep there job as I remember from the 60 minutes interview I saw a bit ago. Really want to get that book!

  25. Frank, Zappos offers $3000 to walk away. It’s $2000 while in training and then they up the ante when you get done with training, for only 3 weeks. Once you graduate from incubation, the offer is off the table. You can find the book on Amazon.com if you want to buy one. It’s a really good read and interesting to read about how the company got started. It’s an amazing company! Best company I ever worked for!

  26. Andrew, I would like the availability of wi-fi on airplanes in the event of some work-related emergency, but I prefer the quiet to read a book on my kindle or a magazine when I am flying than work my computer. As for the ability to use cellphones, I think I would have a nervous breakdown if I had to sit next to someone blabbing away on the phone for an entire flight, of any length. The seat widths, even in first class, do not allow for enough separation to not have to listen to someone’s calls.

Where are all the East Indian comments lately?

  28. Thanks for the gr8 info [as always] Andrew!
Video played Fine for me at these SpeedTest.net test results: http://www.speedtest.net/result/957751557.png

Re: wi-fi on board airliners..So long as people can be quiet and keep to themselves…I have no problem with it. Cell phones and noisy kids are My pet peeves. As for the ‘talkers’ … one can always excuse themselves for ‘Nap-Time’.

It looks like passengers may one day have a LOT to look at to keep them busy while flying. http://t.co/y7NVCYu
Personally, I think it’d be pretty Freaky!

  29. I have to agree with Bill Blake above.

Having wifi on flights simply gives one the choice. If you’d like to turn on your computer and fire up your email, you can.

If you don’t want to be “disturbed” by communications from down under, either don’t open your email, or better still, don’t even take your laptop out.

    Problem solved.

Of course, if one doesn’t have the will-power to keep his or her laptop in their bag, then that’s a different problem. But, it shouldn’t be everyone else’s problem.

  30. Don Chamberlin says:

Love the videos… the last two (122 and 123 in iTunes) will not load on my iPad. Just says, “…because they cannot be played on this iPad”. Never happened before those episodes. :-( Looking forward to getting things back in gear!

  31. Don,

We’ll check into those iTunes issues.

    Regards

    Andrew

  32. Have same problem with loading. It stopped after every third word.

    Love the show!!

  33. The conversation on Wifi on planes is threefold in my opinion. There is the issue of peace and quiet, a possible income stream for airlines at a time when revenue is hard to come by in the airline business – and more importantly the issue of health of the travellers.
I declare my interest now and it’s about the health angle. As a veteran frequent flier of 12 years, and a specialist in healthy jet lag remedies I wrote about this very topic (Wave Your Health Goodbye With Sky High Wifi) @NaturalNews.com. Simply put, above peace of mind and revenue for airlines FRYING YOUR BRAIN at altitude without the protection of the oxygen we take for granted at sea level is not a good idea and shouldn’t be encouraged.
There is an art to healthy flying and being jet lag free, Wifi at altitude is unhealthy more than anything else.

  34. I had the loading problem also. I right clicked and opened under the “open with new tab”, it opened right up no problem.

  35. i wanted to see your microwave marketing offer so i clicked the link under the video with this text: Special offer for Microwave Marketing (download the audio and PDF free guides)

but i was redirected to this site:
    http://www.productivitythursday.com/replay/
    which is not related.

love your show so i figured i’d help you out with what seems a bad link…

    thanks and cheers, grace

  36. Thanks Grace, we’ll update the link.

    Regards

    Andrew

  37. Downloading is still very slow i`ll come back another time thanks.

  38. Last I heard, after 4 weeks of paid training, Zappos makes the new trainees an offer of $1,000 bonus to quit. Very few ever take them up on the offer. Very cool idea (if you’re already a billion dollar company ;) )

    Great show Andrew!
