Shake Shack in New York is a fast food restaurant that’s the brainchild of savvy restaurant owner Danny Meyer of Gramercy Tavern fame. He’s opened up several outlets of Shake Shack in Manhattan that bring something fresh and innovative to the burger scene. I visited the newest outlet near Times Square and the place was packed. This is a great example of effective marketing in a crowded niche.
What’s your opinion about business cards? Personally, I think they’re over rated. Too many business owners rely on them as the easy way out of marketing. They CAN be useful as a tool to simply pass on contact information, but not much else. A MUCH better marketing strategy is to give a book you’ve authored, or a DVD about your business, in place of a business card. It’ll get people’s attention, and they’ll view you as the expert authority in your niche. Think about YOUR reaction to receiving a book or DVD instead of a business card – see what I mean?
I’m an avid reader, I consume business books like burgers! One challenge is, with so many books available, how do you know which ones to read, and which ones to ignore? That’s where YourNextRead.com comes in. It’s a book recommendation engine that’s simple, and fast to use. I think you’ll like it.
This week’s BIG marketing lesson is from Tire Warehouse, a nationwide chain of tire suppliers. They utilize an interesting marketing strategy where they encourage customers to call competitors! Why would they do that? Watch this episode and you’ll find out…
As usual, let me know your opinion about the topics covered in the show to help your small business this week – leave your comment below, it’s really easy to do, no registration required.

Hi Andrew,
I haven’t given out a business card in 2 years. Maybe its because of the industry I’m in.
A few years ago we were exchanging digital business cards via our mobile phones but at a tech expo I attended recently, people were sharing data and apps via smartphones and tablets.
August 4th, 2010 at 3:51 am
“Everything is marketing and marketing is everything”…so true. So nicely stated and so well presented. The video is quite informative and grasping. Made me stick to it, watching till the end. Every point made was precise, even the tips about business cards. And yes I would try out Shake shack shakes as advised by you and yes, Spice ad was really different and entertaining.
August 4th, 2010 at 3:57 am
I totally agree with regards to the business cards Andrew, however I own a Gym and we’ve created business cards for the M’ship team which have a complimentary visit on the back, it works well.
Love your show and all business distinctions, thank You.
August 4th, 2010 at 4:19 am
I love those old spice ads! It almost makes me want to get the product for my husband. Too bad it smells like my dad!
I agree about business cards being a method of passing on contact information, although I like a well designed one that feels nice, and my favorite ones I remember. However, I can hardly see myself going to a networking event and handing out books or DVDs to everyone!
I look forward to trying Shake Shack when the crowds die down. I wonder if the people on line for Shake Shack were the same people who stood on line for the iPhone…
August 4th, 2010 at 4:25 am
I find the BEST use for business cards is to put your social media contacts on the back.
I have Facebook, twitter, linkedin, pod0matic, you tube, and my yelp site on the BACK of my business card so people can check me out.
August 4th, 2010 at 4:37 am
Well, this was interesting to watch, but the guy does not have a good voice to listen to if you ask me. the part about buseness cards i do not really agree with as well, it might not be the best way to advert your buseness, but, like said, isnt it for giving out your information in a nice small size, wich fits in your wallet?
but all in all, i liked watching the video, and the advice was presented in a good way, without talking around it.
August 4th, 2010 at 4:46 am
This was an interesting video to watch.I really enjoyed watching it.i liked your presentation style about the credit card, and i agree about business cards being a method of passing on contact information.
August 4th, 2010 at 5:39 am
Business cards are a great way to get contact info in a setting where toting around books or DVDs isn’t convenient or practical. Yes, they do get tossed or lost in the crowd sometimes but if you find a person really interesting either personally of professionally, it’s good to have a way to get in touch with them.
BTW, my feeling is that business cards should also have the mailing address of the person on the card. I see lots of business cards that have no address whatsoever or have a “corporate” mailing address which is not even close to where the person named on the card is really [physically] located.
I do the SendOutCards thing so it’s nice for me to have a mailing address where the person named on the card will actually receive a nice “thank you” or “it was nice to meet you” type card.
RE: Old Spice. Cute commercials. If I start using it will I look buff like the guy in the commercial? Please. Pretty please. Pretty please with a cherry on top.
August 4th, 2010 at 5:49 am
Andrew-
Great show as always! Two quick thoughts on your show-
1. The Old Spice commercials are very entertaining to watch. However, from what I’ve read, they’ve done almost nothing to increase the sales of Old Spice. As a commentor before me pointed out, she didn’t want her husband to smell like her dad. They should have used this marketing strategy to launch a new line and invited their viewers to sample it.
2. In your segment about your recent Las Vegas trip, I wondered if your hand gestures were intentional as you were talking about Hooters??? Either way, very funny when you see it again.
All my best
Bryce

Hi Andrew,
A great idea for an alternative and memorable business card is to use a memory stick with a short video on it of you giving out your contact details. These can be ordered in all sorts of shapes and sizes and with your company logo on them. You can also put other useful items on the memory stick like you company brochure, a whitepaper, promotional video or anything else which would be interesting to your client. Most people use memory sticks so it would be a fairly constant reminder of you.
August 4th, 2010 at 6:23 am
I like the word what Andrew said that business card is not the primary key of marketing. Actually the marketing doesn’t want any business card, if a person having the knowledge of that particular field. He don’t want anything to consider. And the add on old spice in the video is just cool. I love watching that add again. Thanks Andrew for giving your experience to people like us.
August 4th, 2010 at 8:10 am
The show is so cool! It gives businessmen great tips that they can do on their business. Adding the “Old Spice” video at the beginning makes it interesting to watch. About the calling card to make it memorable? Try putting your photo as a background watermark. It will definitely give a memorable Calling Card.
I am going to definitely watch this show.
August 4th, 2010 at 8:24 am
Great show Andrew. What’s your view about taking clients for a business lunch? It’s worked ok for me in the past!
August 4th, 2010 at 10:06 am
Enjoyed this show, and your insights with the tire ad. It would have been great to see you do the same with the Old Spice ad, and the Shake Shack example.
Kind of disappointed you didn’t expound more on those two.
Thanks again for your hard work.

I always like the idea of the business lunch or dinner. These days it is hard to find a good place for a business lunch though, as it seems that every place feels the need to blast the stereo so loud you can’t hear each other talk. Having to repeat things over and over gets distracting and loses it’s point.
I expect a new kind of business card to start appearing soon. Much like the memory stick idea. A card that can connect to the computer, or our smartphones. All the business info, plus possible video (business pitch) or pictures (of the business with descriptions of the business goals, and a picture of the actual person) With the ability to be able to save the info, with a simple click, to outlook, google contacts, or smartphone contacts etc. All of that is so integrated now anyway.

This video is real,y help full.
August 4th, 2010 at 10:52 am
I thought it was interesting, watching your WebCast today. You gave a moment to your sponsor Blue Host (your preferred hosting company), but just to the right of your video is a sponsor spot for Fat Cow. Because I watch you religiously I trust you, but that threw up a red flag for me… It is an incongruity and leaves me with a dissident tone that is hanging in the air unresolved.
I am interested in your response.

The show was very intresting and infomative. the unconventional approch towards marketing sounds very promising. Thank you Andrew.
August 5th, 2010 at 9:58 am
I certainly would not agree that Business Cards are dead! They may not be a marketing ploy, but the first thing a potential customer asks for is for your business card – and if you do not give him/her one don’t expect a phone call. But i would strongly suggest that you use both sides of the card. Over the last year I have observed that virtually everytime I give one out, They always turn it over to see if anything is on the other side!
August 5th, 2010 at 11:02 am
Hi, im watching you show with iTunes, but last to shows seems to be damaged, all I see is pixelated colour noise. Any chance to fix it?
August 5th, 2010 at 12:26 pm
I really liked the unconventional marketing tips. I enjoyed the Ad Spice Body Lotion, smell like a man. I found the tips of Dave Crenshaw interesting too. It was overall a good experience.
August 5th, 2010 at 3:49 pm
Business cards definitely are not dead! The world hasn’t caught up with the digital age in many ways. Focus on making your card usable and professional.
August 5th, 2010 at 5:26 pm
Hey Andrew, great show! I look forward to seeing it every week. You need to put another feather in your cap as I am launching a second web TV show next week and it all came from your webinar last December!!!
Cheers, Gary

Another Psychocelic version of the show. The show downloaded by ITUNES is full of colors…again
August 5th, 2010 at 11:10 pm
Thank you for this wonderful and informative video.I really enjoyed the show a lot and I am a great fond of eating, this Shake Shack restaurant information video will help me a lot. This video is very real and I thank you Andrew for all this.I totally agree with the business card.
August 5th, 2010 at 11:22 pm
Hey Andrew, I appreciate the way you presented the program. The program tell us important tips of marketing. To catch the attention of customers it is better to make their business cards with different materials such as thin wood, thin glass etc. The Old Spice ad was interesting and funny.
August 6th, 2010 at 2:54 am
This is my first time watching this show. I totally agree about making unique business cards that stand out. Using books or DVDs as business cards is an interesting idea.
August 6th, 2010 at 3:10 am
Andrew, your ideas have always helped me. The simple thing about cards is that they are just a means to contact, but DVD’s or a book would for sure leave a note. “i consume books like burgers”-funny. anyways thanks for new ideas
August 6th, 2010 at 6:08 am
The video is quite informative and grasping. Made me stick to it, watching till the end. To catch the attention of customers it is better to make their business cards with different materials such as thin wood, thin glass etc. thanks for new ideas

August 7th, 2010 at 3:12 am
Hmmm i dont agree that the business cards are dead. But that is your opinion…
August 7th, 2010 at 6:47 am
hi Andrew, this is a smooth show with lots of variation (it’s the first episode i’ve seen)
i agree with you that business cards aren’t the way to go anymore, BUT i think the same goes for dvd’s. Why? in this digital world, it almost seems like discs are going to be old fashioned as well… Now some people might say the same goes for books, but i think giving out a nice little book as a business presentation would be a very attractive to do, especially if you want to represent class, chique, whatever you want to call it.
one idea would not be a book with essays, or something like that, not true advertising, but fresh ideas, which then get associated with your business/brand.
August 7th, 2010 at 6:48 am
sorry typo
“one idea would not be a book”
of course it WOULD be a book.
August 7th, 2010 at 7:31 am
I encourage my clients to use business cards. I also encourage them to use bullets on the back highlighting their business products or services. I suggest putting their portrait photo either on the front or back. One of the best business cards I’ve ever seen was for a landscaping company. On the front were 4 photos of projects they had landscaped and their company name. The back of the card had the contact details. Those 4 colorful photos said it all. After all, a picture is worth a thousand words
August 7th, 2010 at 1:46 pm
Great job andrews.. you are a REAL BUSINESS guru. It ll help me get a good grade in my MBA.
August 7th, 2010 at 2:34 pm
Thanks for the great video. I learned a lot from it. Wish I´d seen it before.
August 7th, 2010 at 2:42 pm
Very interesting and fun video. I’ll definitely check out the others.
August 7th, 2010 at 3:01 pm
I loved it! I’ll be back for more and have already started browsing through past episodes. As a small business owner myself, I am always looking for better marketing ideas. Tech is the way to go, for everything. I’ll admit I still have a rolodex on my desk with a few business cards in it, but all those numbers are still in my droid. I even look up numbers online though the aps rather than looking in the rolodex.
August 7th, 2010 at 5:23 pm
Very interesting show. Funny and informative. I really haven’t received many business, and think that they really are useless nowadays, with the internet, and everybody having a cellphone where to keep contacts.
August 7th, 2010 at 7:22 pm
Great Episode ! Now i will definitive watch the other’s. I think it’s great that you sacrify this much of your time to help out others with their problems.
You’re so right about business cards on example. My Company gives out usb-sticks branded with our company logo and additional company information on them.

Hi Andrew, I loved your video. It offers many valuable tips and insights into how a simple aspect of business like business card makes a whole lot of difference. I agree that a business card is the face of the company. Many thanks for the old spice commercials. It made me feel nostalgic.
August 8th, 2010 at 9:13 pm

I still use and encourage my clients to use business cards. It has my portrait on it and most of the business cards I get from others also does have one along with their products and services. One time in a party I got this card from a guy who does the mixing part for the movies, that was so awesome, I decided to redo mine in the similar pattern. Front side it had 6 small icons of the brands he has worked for and at the back they had the technologies they use.

Jesus I havent used a business card in years cause they are such a waste if one thing changes like your phone or email or website. Plus they are bad for the environment. DVD are about the same way, I havent used my DVD in ages either, I download most of my movies via i-tunes to a computer in my entertainment center. Good show thou, I already get your podcasts for a bit now, keep up the good work. Cheers
August 10th, 2010 at 10:54 pm
Time management is very important to fruitful living. As Andrew said if we don’t keep a time boundary for our work we let it run all day and it will only clutter our thought processes.
I really like the site yournextread.com. Really a cool site to keep track of what to read next.
August 11th, 2010 at 2:37 am
i like the concept of replacing the business card with something else like a usb key or the like but how many people do you know really look or keep those things. I hate business cards myself cause i have a stack of them in the desk. It really doesnt make me want to go and call those people. I just think its a waste of paper and anything to replace it would be the same. I do like the videos thou, nice tips most of the time, just not this one.
August 11th, 2010 at 5:37 am

Andrew,
For the past year or so I’ve really enjoyed the information you’ve provided us in your weekly shows. I’ve got my iTunes account set up to automatically download all new episodes. Unfortunetely for the past several weeks the downloaded episodes have been totally unviewable. When it happened a few weeks ago I thought maybe it’s just my machine or my download, but it’s been the same over the past several weeks. In a attempt to isolate the problem to find out if it’s on my end our your end or Apple’s end, can you tell me if other people are having similar problems?? Thank you!

Thanks for your great job. The show is really amazing and informative. Your view about business cards and the Shake Shack example are really helpful for a marketing student like me.
August 14th, 2010 at 2:11 am
Hey, who is this man talking? I really love the way he talks. The show is so nice and I really enjoyed it . Business cards, indeed, can help any businesses in marketing. Lovely video and I learned so much about marketing from it.
August 14th, 2010 at 5:40 am
This is a very interesting and informational video I must say. I liked how the owner of Shake Shack has been imaginative and professional enough to made his joint stand out from the rest by giving better quality of food and service there.
I also liked Dave’s idea of marking boundaries and forcing yourself to stick to them by finding and creating tools and systems that help us achieve our desired targets. Finally, I agree that business cards at most can only be a way to get acquainted but never a serious tool to get business. Look forward to more such inspiring videos in future too.
August 14th, 2010 at 6:33 am
it’s really good.it mainly concentrate on business

So what exactly does it take to get you to respond to your paying clients? How about when your client cancels an account and you keep charging him?
Wow, perhaps you need someone to teach you about a little thing called customer service. Yours SUCKS!!! 6th attempt to contact you in 35 days, not a single reply, and you continue to take money from my accounts despite my cancellation… Others would do well to stear clear of you.

Hi Andrew,
Another great video! You have a wonderful way of speaking and presenting your ideas. Always a pleasure.
Just a quick comment about setting boundaries for your business. It’s absolutely true. Without clear-cut goals and limits, business life threatens to overwhelm and consume you.
Excellent advice. Thank you!

Old spice ad? Wow that was really funny and remember-able. I specifically liked the Ask andrew part…as a marketing person by education I was taught that card was one of the major tool…infact how you hand over the card is very impo…nice show…
